I have an 02 cc 4.7l and recently I've noticed a humming noise that seems to be coming from the front. It's similar to the sound of some big mud tires. When I'm driving straight or turn to the left, the noise is there, but if I turn a little to the right, I can't hear it. I was thinking maybe some bearings, or something like that. Has anyone had this problem, or have any ideas what might be causing this?

ok, here's some more information. I jacked up each front tire yesterday, and the driver side seems fine, and on the pass. side, it seems like the wheel doesn't spin as easy as the driver side. What parts are in there that could go bad. Bearings? If I replace the bearings, are there other parts that I would have to replace as well. Any help is appreciated.

Check your calipers to ensure they aren't sticking. Other than that, it probably is the bearing going bad. Take them out and take a look. If you replace one side, I would do the other as well.

OUr bearings are pretty expensive to be replacing both sides if only one is making noise.

How difficult is it to replace the wheel bearing/hub assembly? Are any special tools required to pull the hub? I have the replacement part but want to make sure I have the proper equipment before I tear into this... Thanks!

ok, I jumped into this last week and it took a few attempts, but I got it replaced. The first couple try's, I ran into minor problems. I couldn't get the spindle nut off by hand, so I went to a tire shop and they loosened it with an impact. Then I didn't have the right allen wrench for the calipers. once I got all the tools I needed, I got everything taken off and the hub was stuck on the spindle. I heated it, and it moved a little but not much. I ended up having to take it to a shop to have it removed, but I think it was stuck because it had heated up and basically welded itself to the spindle. I got some emory cloth and the new one went on easily. So, if you haven't run your truck with bad bearings for a long time like I did, you should be able to remove the hub, otherwise, get a heavy duty puller and an impact wrench.

Thanks for the info. I had wondered about using a puller. I just put new brake pads and rotors on this past weekend. Didn't feel like taking on the wheel bearing at the time. I'm hoping I can get the nut off with a breaker bar and a 3' peice of pipe for leverage. My main concern is getting the hub off after that... I have a puller but I'm not sure it will do this. I've only used it to remove harmonic balancers...

the puller I had started to bend. Also, I broke a ratchet and a breaker bar trying to get that nut off. If you can't get it loose, just bring your socket with you to a tire shop and ask if they can break it loose for you.

Only 85 bucks?? That's pretty cheap. Are they the same part as the Durango's? My buddy just paid over 300 (canadian) for his. Haven't had to do mine yet.

Don't know if they are the same for the Durango. The Dodge dealer wanted $179 for the hub assembly. I did have to buy the spindle nut from the dealer, $15.00. I plan on changing it out Saturday, will let ya all know how much of a pain in the ass it turns out to be!!!

Well, changed out the hub assy this weekend. Went extremely well. No trouble getting the spindle nut off at all and the hub came right off, didn't even need to use a puller. Too bad everything doesn't go this smooth!!!

I have started noticing the "4x4 hum" in my 2000 2wd truck lately also. Seems like mine is coming from the rearend though. Hard to tell for sure.

Hello,
I just changed the right side hub assemblyon my 2001 Quad 4x4. Went ok,had to drive a small chisel to break the hub free. On reassembly,was going fin & then putting on caliper,the top pin just happend to be stripped. So today just purchased the oversized self tapping caliper pin.It took a good hold & hopefully will do the job. Noise in front end has dissapeared. Yeah!!

Correction,it wasnt the pin that was stripped it was the housing knuckle that accepeted the pin bolt that was stripped.
$350 for the knuckle so I opted for the oversized pin.

Well it seems that the Dakota's have a problem with the caliper bolts (pins) stripping out. The oversized bolt (pin) works well, but be sure to use thread locker on the bolt (pin) threads before screwing it in. I believe when the pin strips out, the caliper becomes loose, the pads rub, heats up the brake rotor which in turn overheats the bearing and wipes it out over time.
