Subject: Engine swap?

Message:
Hey guys, i am considering swaping my 3.9 for a 5.2 in my '99 Dak. What else will need to be replaced? radiator? tranny? computer? rear end? It currently has a 5-speed trans, and a 8 1/4 rear with 3.21s. I am also on a budget. Do you think i'm just better off looking for a different truck w/ the 318 already in it? Thanks for the advice.
Brian

Thanks for the advice guys. I looked into trading in my truck, and I found one online, a 318 5-speed with 107,000 miles on it, but they said they would only give me 2k for a trade in, so right now i'm trying to sell my truck outright and get at least blue book for private party. But I don't know, patience is a virtue...

The swap takes a weekend if you know what you're doing, maybe 2 weekends if you don't. Your NV3500 would hold up perfectly despite what others say, they just read posts and make comments without actually doing the swap.

You'll need a new flywheel, easily attainable. You can get it for under $100, the guy at autozone quoted me 49.99 for a 5.9 flywheel from a dodge ram (remanned of course). So I assume a flywheel from a 318 would run about the same. You also need a new computer, preferably 1 from your year.

Wiring harness you can add the 2 injector pins easily, run them to the 17 and 18 pins from the connector, splice them into the grounds of the other injectors.

Biggest headaches:
Reaching ALL the transmission bolts
Reaching the header bolts (I had to buy 2 new ones)
Make sure the engine is already assembled via sparkplugs etc so you don't have to mess with them while the engine is in.
Matching the splines up from engine to transmission. Not a big deal just annoying

It took me 1 weekend to do it with my friends help and a regular engine crane (150 bucks). 8.25 rear end holds up just fine. The NV3500 is rated at 300hp, your 318 won't put you anywhere near that threshold.

I don't think the '99 has an NV3500. According to my '99 owner's manual, the trucks with the 2.5L and 5.2L engines came with the NV1500, while the 3.9L trucks came with an AX-15. Don't know why Dodge did it this way, but make sure you know what's there before assuming the wrong thing.

if your gonna put a 318, why not go all the way a do a 360 swap? a bit more low end torque to have with that engine.

Dont own my truck and am not that close to paying that off. Actually I screwed myself and paid what they were asking for and I couldn't sell it for what i owe on it. I would do this since I'm going into the navy and I would just buy a new one once I'm in school and get things rolling. Maybe if I'm really patient I could in about a year. Anyone know if you can sell a warranty? I purchased one with the truck because of what happened with my other truck I wasn't ready to go through that again.

modain - My 1999 Dakota 5.2 has the NV3500 in it. But your are correct in the fact that he has to be sure which tranny he has before assuming that his tranny will be fine.

your a fool if you join the navy. i was a fool just like you. now im paying for it with 4 years of my life. do yourself a favor. if you MUST join the navy, cause your stupid, sign for 2 years. you can do it. at least i know i could have when i joined. dont forget, recuiters lie. they want you to sign the line for a reason. it gets them better evaluations and crap for promotion. they will tell you what you want to hear to get you to sign. you'll probably find out the hard way.

i still recommend not going to a carrier if you can help it. we deploy anytime with little or no notice. but i myself wouldnt want to be on a sub either. ive seen the living conditions on one....fu(k that....
being in the navy has kinda ruined my motovation to toy around with cars and trucks now. i dont modify anything, race anything, offroad anything, or do much else than hang out at the bar scene. the only good thing im gonna get from this crap is a good oportunity for alot of careers. the reason is because its stressfull. i hate being controlled all the time and doing demeaning and degrading jobs does not help.
