Hello,

I'm having a bit of a problem with my truck (91 dodge dakota v8 5.9L 318) and since I don't know anything about vehicles I thought I would ask online.

I'll tell you abit about what I am experiencing behind the wheel.

1)When I have steady pressure on the gas pedal sometimes it feels as if all power is taken away and it's gunna stall.. but never does.

2)When I come to a stop light after I've fully braked the truck seems to leerch forward and rev a bit louder than normal. It helps if I put it into neutral at lights... just so it'll calm down.

Also.. the weirdest thing happened yesterday... I was parked and it was reving up on its own.. when I put it into drive it took off really fast without even having to put my foot on the gas. Scary truck!

------------------------------------------------
A friend of mine thought that there was a problem with the air filter. We changed it. It didn't fix the problem. So we changed the fuel filter (which was so clogged he couldn't blow through it) and got a complete oil/lube change. None of that has seemed to help.

I would really appreciate whatever help you could give me.

Thanks

My friend said it couldn't possibly be the TPS because of .. I can't remember. Some kind of mechanical jargon. I will get a second opinion on that as I never rule anything out!

Anyways... he recommended cleaning out the carb because there does seem to be a build up of gunk around the flaps.

I have also put some fuel injector cleaner in the gas and have yet to a difference.

I am about to clean out the carb and if anyone has any tips that would be mucho appreciated!

Yeah I don't know much about trucks. 5.2L it is.

Also about the carb. LOL@me. My friend keeps giving me slack for that. Your truck doesn't have a carb!!! It has two cylinders with two flaps on the inside.. (whatever that is). I cleaned it out yesterday and it had like burnt charcoal texture on the inside.

It hasn't fixed the problem.

Another friend said definately fuel pump because the same thing happened to his truck. But, I can't afford to go around buying pieces for it.

I told friend #1 about TPS and they said no way.. and they were pretty much my only "inside scoop" to the mechanical world. I don't know what a tps does or where it is in my truck. So I can't really go fiddling around. I'll have to get the opinion of a shop and I know that'll probably cost some money. Argh!

Oh yeah and to add to the list of whats going on to the truck.. today there was like a power shortage in the truck.. the cd starts flickering and the dash.. and the truck sounded like it was dying... so i figure no fuel getting to it maybe its the pump??

Anyways sorry for the ramble. Does anyone know where to find an online manual for a dodge dakota? And one more question..can you clean out your own fuel pump?

Thanks

Oh yeah about the tune up.... I haven't had one. I assume thats where they hook your truck up to a computer to make sure everything is running properly?

the TPS is the throttle position sensor. It sends the position of the throttle blades to the computer and uses various other sensors to help with fuel, timing, and other various functions.

the TPS can be the problem but i imagine with a motor that old, you've probably got several problems.

before spending money on parts, spend money on a voltmeter, a fuel pressure tester and a haynes dakota manual. you should test the parts before replacing them, saving you a few bucks in the end.

no that would be a diagnostic

a basic tuneup would be changing the normal time interval items:

* spark plugs
* spark plug wires
* distributor cap
* distributor rotor
* thermostat
* clean the throttle body (two cylinders with two flaps on the inside)
* replace fuel filter
* change oil

etc
etc
etc

I can not understand why so many of you spend spend and spend hoping to out guess the problem. Pretty obvious that is not a good approach. It takes proper testing to find a real problem.There is no other logical way.

and many many times the pros with the propper testing equipment resort to throwing part at it until they happen upon the correct one
thats what they did to my 01 1500 when the tranny was acting up

realizing its an old post i'll tell you almost for certain that sounds like an idle air control issue. thats why if you crack the throttle it will stay running.

no the tach just jumps from round 200 to 3500. to start the vehicle i have to clamp the return gas line then it will idle at various degrees. i only had 3 lbs of fuel pressure so i put a new pump on. the alt was bad because of negative feedback thruough the system. the alt is regulated by the computer.

Idle control motor- I think that's the proper name for it- about $150 from Dodge- three screws and two minutes to change (if it's not the tps, that is)
