Ok I have a 99 Dakota 4X4. I have put a flowmaster exhaust system on, K&N intake, Throttle body spacer, and changed gears to 4:56's. Oh yeah it rides on 36's. I would like to know what I could possibly do to increase gas mileage. Even if it is up to 10 MPG. Please help, gas is killing me.

James

make sure the engine is in the best state of tune possible. check tire pressure. run all synthetic fluids. that should do it other than dropping the 36's and 4.56 gears.

when you are calculating your MPG, are you taking in consideration how far off the speedometer is going to be with 36" tires?

my 3 speed automatic big block gets better mileage than that and i always tromp on it.. hard to understand a 318 getting that kind of mileage without seeing fuel spill from the tailpipes.

I was interested in James' last comment about not getting better than 11 MPG before doing anything to the truck. I have a 2000 CC 4X4 4.7. I have a Magnaflow catback, a K&N air filter and it rides on 32" MTR tires. Even when I keep my foot out of it, I can't getter better than 10 or 11. I always thought it was just my truck. I do check the tire pressure and I have only ever run synthetic oil (never changed trans fluid or diff fluid). I'm interested in anyones suggestions as well.

James,

if you are not taking the tire size into consideration, then you are getting worried about an inacurate MPG. With bigger tires, you are going to travel a longer distance than your odometer reports and you will be going faster than the speedometer shows you... and when you go 6-7" bigger in diameter, it really hurts it!.

even though your odometer says you are going say 200 miles, you are probably going more like 300 miles. You should get your speedo set right soon. The gears will not change the speedo since the speedometer works off of a tone ring, but the tire size will effect it, and in your case, greatly.

I am interested in the 4.56. How's the low end with it. I got a 6" lift with 33's and 3.92's. My speedometer doesn't work and my odometer doesn't work either. I think it has something to do with the sensor on the rear diff. I get about 16 mpg on the highway once when going 80 and my speedo started working.

wouldnt that gear ratio and larger tires be hell on gas mileage. I would think that gear ratio alone would tach the vehicle really high anything over 55. right?

\your o2 sensors might be bad. maybe replace them if they never been replaced. that can affect gas mileage. but with the gears and tire size you have I wouldnt expect nothing to great on improving gas mileage.

the shorter gears actually help with the taller tires in gas mileage... just 4.56 gears isnt enough to keep up with 36" tires.

I ran some injector cleaner threw the tank hopein to maybe get a lil bit better, and if i really try i can get around 10 or 11, but that is driving like a old lady.any idea's?

I have a 1999 5.2 liter 4x4 Dakota with the 31" tires. It's a 5 speed too though and has the 3.55 gears.

I bought it 14 months ago at 72k miles, it was severely out of tune and was pinging like no tomorrow. I was averaging mid 14's MPG in the city. I replaced the plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor and I rerouted the plug wires according to the TSB from Dodge. I also went with the 8.5mm Mopar performance wires and Champion Truck Plugs. That got rid of a lot of the pingning and gave me about .3 more miles per gallon in the city.

I then put a high flow muffler(Flowmaster series 40) on the truck, keeping the rest of the exhaust stock. That got my gas mileage up to an average of 15.2mpg. Then I spent 65 dollars on a simple round air cleaner and now I'm up to averaging around 16.4 mpg in the city.

I had bought this waste of money(180 dollars!!!) Air Raid warm air intake, I had it on the truck for over six months and it didn't make a single difference in my Miles Per Gallon over the factory air intake.

And all of this is while my plenum gasket is blown. Tomorrow however, I am getting a www.HughesEngines.com stage one modified beer barrel intake manifold installed. I fully expect my gas mileage to go up to over 17mpg in the city with this mod.

You can see my new air cleaner on page two of this site...
