DESPERATE! 2000 DD-Quad Cab 4x4 w/ 5.9. Truck bucks / surges while under load. ie., going up hill. Acts like it can't figure out
what gear to go into.. or ? Have taken it to 4 shops, 1st was a Dodge dealer, wrong! wanted to replace my trany for $3k.
So, I took it to a trany shop for a 2nd opinion, they ran diags and said it wasn't the trany, something in the engine. Then took it to
two different shops, both said engine diags show nothing and don't know what could be causing it.

It's been doing this for about 4 months now and getting worse.!!

Motor also pings unless I run super.

Update / forgot to talk about my milage. was getting 14/15mpg, mix driving / trucks now at 9mpg. Had a full tune-up done, injectors cleaned and the mpg went up to 11mpg. That was about a month ago, and it's now back down to 9....argh... help!

what octane gas are you running? maybe your fuel filter needs replacing. make sure all your vac lines and connectors are hooked up proberly.

one thing is a computer cant tell you anything wrong with a vehicle. if the vehicle computer isnt programed for it to come up with a code. this is why I dont like those diag computers just something to take your money and makes the techs job easier. by saying nothing wrong with your car. the computer says so. even though there is.

Try taking your overdrive off while you're going up a hill. See if that makes the problem buck/surge go away. Honestly, I think you have 2 problems.

overdrive off / tried that, also tried to shift down when it begins bucking. solves the problem for a few seconds, then starts bucking again.
The trany shop i took it to ran diags while we drove, and as the truck bucked, he showed me the shifting points via the portable diag system. it's was showing 1st to 2nd to 3rd, no problem. Trany dude said his guess was some sort of sensor for the fule input ? had that checked, all ok.
I'm really at a loss. And just about ready to sell this truck to anyone who'll take it :-P

It only does it up hill under load? What if you brake torque it sitting still, does the engine misfire or run rough then? In this situation, you have to rule out the trans or the engine, which hasn't been done. Here's the thing...the scanner might say it's shifting, but it doesn't know if a clutch is slipping, a sensor is giving false readings, etc... (see my point?) What are the sensor readings? Is the TPS accurate and smooth? What about your adaptive fuel values...are they running way rich or way lean? O2's? What is your fuel pressure like? Did you recheck your new plugs? Maybe an electrode got bent during installation. It could be a lot of things...just have to start narrowing it down. Heck you could have a crank sensor harness rubbing and shorting out only on hills under load. I've seen it before. Like I said, gotta narrow it down. What you need to do first is find a tech that actually knows how to correctly diagnose a driveability problem. Not play guessing games. I'm sure it's something stupid...just gotta pick it apart!

I just bought a 00 quad cab 5.9. Driving down the road with the cruise it will cut out and jerk as if it's not getting the correct amount of fuel.I went from ethenol to plain regular and that made a huge differance. My biggest complaint on this truck is the fuel mileage,15 on the highway. Can anyone tell me how to increase this. I would like to be up in the high teens.

I had a burnt up coil wire. Was doing it for about two weeks before it burnt in half. Changed coil, plugs and wires. Running fine. Funny thing when it burnt in half the spark was jumping across just enough to keep the truck running. I had to cut the wire back and just stick it under the boot to make me to the store. good luck

My first step would be changing the TPS. It's quick and cheap (40 bucks) so what have you got to lose? So many sensors get thier info from the TPS that it could cause many problems. My 2000 4x4 5.9 QC started bucking on the highway and the tach would jump about 200 rpm and come back down. Made me think I had a tranny going out but the TPS swap fixed her.

Hello, I don't mean to steel anyone's posts, but I have a similar but different problem. I have a 99 5.2 with a manual. Every time I start the truck it idles fine and what not, then 1/4 mile down the street it starts to buck and almost die out. If I don't push the clutch in, it will surely stall out. If I am on the gas, the motor will bog and drop rpm's. This started off intermittenly, but now is happening each time I start the truck and after 1/4 mile or so. I have replaced the IAT, IAC, both O2 sensors, ran fuel injection cleaner, "SeaFoam" into my combustion chamber. Also I have replaced the TPS sensor.

I don't think it is a matter of the fuel pump or injectors because wouldn't the problem be constant? After it surges and does its thing, it will drive normal. My gas milage is about 12mpg. I have a 116,000 miles on the truck.

I put my money on the tranny as well. It's probably the clutch pack slipping. Eventually, you will drop a gear.

Happend to one of the guys at work on his chevy truck. He replaced, fuel pump, throtle position sensor, Map sensor, o2 sensor. After all that still bucked.

Then, when he finally dropped a gear. He knew it was the tranny. lol.

New Tranny fixed his bucking and surging problem.

new plugs, tps, O2 now it runs smooth as silk. Gas mileage is still a problem. Drive 90 miles a day round trip to work. Anyone want a Quad cab with a 5.9? Runs great-pulled a trailer full of dirt this weekend, truck acted as if there was not a trailer behind it. Gas mileage just sucks.

hey, one big problem with the 360 is they like to vaperlock, Ive had mine stall on me a few times, the best way to avoid that is to have a good cold air intake setup on it. I was just running a K@N factory replacement filter but it was still getting hot air. I finally got rid of the problem by getting a cowl induction hood and running a round filter setup right under the cowl, Now I have a bunch more power and 18-20 mpg
