Subject: 318, ASD Relay problems

I'm having a heck of a time with my '91 Dakota with the 318 in it. I drove the truck home and the next day the ignition system was dead. Cranks but no ignition.

I bought one of those spark testers to see if I was getting anything. When I crank the engine I get one spark from the coil and then nothing else until I turn the key off and then cycle again.

I swapped the ASD relay with the start relay and get the same thing. For some reason the ASD relay is not engaging fully. Voltage at the relay socket is 13 volts for the contacts and the coil.

When I turn the key to run, the ASD relay just taps on then turns off immediately, faster than I can see, but I can hear it and see arcing on the contacts.

I got an error code 42 originally with this, but the computer hasn't generated any more codes. Also the night before this problem the Antilock break light came on.

If anyone could help I would really appreciate it, it's been out of commision for 4 weeks and I really need it running.

When I turn the key to run should the ASD lock to the ON position? Any diagnostics suggestions?

By the way I replaced the crank sensor in the distributor, dist cap, rotor, wires. Checked the connectors for the computer they are all in good shape. The splice connecting the fuel pump, ignition coil and O2 sensor is in good shape. The wiring harness and fusible links, under-hood fuses and cabin fuses are all good from what I can see and test. I checked from the battery + terminal to the ignition coil + side and read 12-13 volts. I check from the battery + terminal side to the line from the computer and read 12-13 volts as well.

It seems as soon as the relay triggers it the computer senses a problem and shuts it down immediately. I can hear the fuel pump spin up when I turn the key to run.

I replaced the O2 sensor a month or so ago and thought maybe there was a short in that, so I pulled the connector for the o2 sensor but it still wouldn't start.

Eh I guess the problem is the computer, I didn't realize the ASD relay is triggered by the pickup on the distributor, so when I crank the relay does close.

Drove truck home, ran fine, got in it the next day, turns over but won't start. That was 6 months ago. Can't figure out the problem. Have already replaced the computer, camshaft sensor, and pick up coil in distributor. Also checked the splice under the relay box under the hood. There is no spark to the coil,oh yell, I replaced the coil too. No spark to coil, distributor,or spark plugs. I am lost, I'm not a mechanic, just doing things the internet sites suggest and different mechanics have told me. CAN ANYONE HELP, PLEASE? I have already spent a lot of money on the truck and am tire of putting parts on and guessing. Has anyone else had this same problem?
