Subject: Ticking sound when 4.7 is cold
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi all, I have a '00 QC 4.7 4x4, and whenever I start the truck when the engine is cold (not necessarily cold outside) I hear a ticking sound coming from the engine compartment. Sounds JUST like a valve tick, but the truck only has 66,000 on it and the ticking goes away as soon as I give it a little throttle and let off of it. Any ideas? Is this a normal "dodge tick"? First Dodge I have ever owned so not sure. Thanks!

I have an '01 4.7 and have never had that problem. I have 82k on the engine. Curious as to white kind of oil you are using. I've always used Castrol SynBlend 5W30.

I'm sure as with most people on this board you are using SynBlend or full Synthetic, but if not, give it a try and see what happens.

Used to hear it on the '95 neon that I used to own and after using synblend oil, it went away.

00 4.7 had it, started at about 100K, only noticed it on cold mornings. 03 4.7 has the same problem at 56K, but I notice it at start-up if the truck has been sitting for a couple of days. Both trucks run on full synthetic 5W30 oil, M1 and Amsoil.

From what I've heard the ticking is because some of the lash adjusters have drained down, then they pump-up when the engine starts up and quite down. Kind of like a bad hydraulic lifter that bleeds down.

I am going to have it repaired right before the 70K warranty expires in hopes that I'll get it fixed along with another warranty repair. Got to make that $100 deductable go as far as posible...

Fugn b@stards better fix all the chit on my laundry list for $100,,, LOL

I really don't know if it's $100 per item or $100 per visit, I think $100 per visit. I found out the 70K extended warranty had a $100 deductable the hard way. Took my truck in at 35, 8xx miles to have them do an alignment and check out the front suspension. They did the alignment and replaced the upper ball joints (which they swore were perfect 1K miles earlier) and sent me off. That day I took it on a road trip for work which took me past 36K miles,,, and I also found out they missed the right front wheel bearing being loose and making a knocking/popping noise during bumps on corners.

Next day at the stealership;

Geeee,,, were sorry, you are past your 36K full warranty and it's going to cost you the $100 of your 7/70K extended warranty for us to replace the wheel bearing, we neglected to replace the previous day, when we were working on the front suspension of your truck, replacing ball joints that we said were perfect a few weeks ago. I biched and we split the deductable.

Thing about the 70K warranty and $100 deductable, I'll only take the truck in for a major repair or multiple repairs. It's cheaper and easier for me to fix the small stuff on my own, think that's why they have the $100 deductable...

Well, nice to know I'm not the only one with this problem. btw, I run mobil 1 full synthetic w/mobil 1 filter. Same oil/filter combo I've run on all my vehicles since mobil one came out with the full synthetic. Just a side note, I hauled a 250gal oil tank (for home heating oil) yesterday from my father-in-law's to my house (220 miles, mostly highway) with the tank weighing in at around 350-400#, and to my surprise, I got better gas mileage coming home than going up, course, I did get stuck behind a LOT of semi's going up and had to keep slowing down and speeding up, held a consistant 80mph on the way home. Got about 20mpg, which I was not at all upset about considering the tank weight and the highway traveled has a LOT of hills. Just thought I'd say that.... Just My 2 Cents.

My truck occasionally ticks slightly until the lifters build back up as well.
I'm running Amsoil full synthetic 10w30.

I'm not worried at all about the very minor and short duration ticking. Many engines have been prone to lifters pumping down and it doesn't cause any problems unless it's continuous and you rev the piss out of it right away.
I just let mine idle and it goes right away. It only does it every once in a while. But I also don't drive mine daily either since I have a co. vehicle. So sometimes I drive my truck almost every day after work. And some times it can sit 3 days without being touched.
33k miles so far.

And as to what DSW said. I've also fixed all my minor problems myself. It's easier than taking it in and leaving it at the dealer.

Our window motor hasn't worked in our Grand Caravan for about 2 months now. I haven't taken it in OR taken a good look at it either. Suppose I better now that I know there is a deductable over 36k miles!

It's your hydraulic valve lash adjusters. Mine did it also. It's just like a valve lifter in a pushrod engine. When they get weak they will bleed the oil down whent he engine is off causing the tapping at startup. At startup as the oil pressure increases it will refill the lifter(or lash adjuster in the 4.7L) and make the noise go away. This could be overnight at first, but as they get worse it will start to happan with in a shorter engine off time. Eventually you run the risk of the thing blowing apart. I've seen it happan on some cars. My Dakota at 82K miles was getting so bad it started to do it all of the time. I never got to replace them before I got rid of the truck. Since it was only on one bank I was just going to replace all on that side. I actually have teh set of 8 on Ebay right now. They are a Dodge only part (typical!) and I paid over $100. for the eight of them. Here is a link if you're interested http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=8001448464&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT
I have no use for them anymore so I am selling them cheap to get rid of them.

I'm sure it's no big deal. My 00 4.7 does it to occasionally. Just be happy that we don't own 3.1/3.4/3.8 GM V6's. I work at checker auto parts, and atleast once a day in the cold winter months i have a customer in complaining about ticking so bad that it could easily be confused as a rod knock. I just kind of chuckle and say that GM says that slight lifter tick at cold start up is perfectly acceptable...just like LS series motors consuming up to 1 quart of oil every 2,000 miles (or something like that). There's nothing wrong with these motors, and once you understand that it is perfectly acceptable, it's no big deal. It's just your average joe thinks that their motor is gonna blow up, or the rings are shot! It's all good stuff
