First thing to check would be the trans linkage to the throttle body. Make sure it moves freely and is not overly adjusted.

If not, could have something worn/sticking in the tranny like the governor.

Check the throttle valve cable and try adjusting it or like graphitedak said, the governor could be sticking.

I agree with checking your throttle cable first.
If you look at the cable where it connects to the throttle body, you will see a line in the middle of the black clip. Remove the cable from the throttle lever and pull the cable to remove slack. (you are not pulling the cable but merely taking slack out of the end after you unclip it) If the line on the clip lines up with the center of the post where it clips...you are ok. If it is off, unclip the square clip on the cable, near the cable bracket, and slide the cable housing back and forth while holding the end of the cable taught. Line up the line in the center of the post, then push the square clip down to hold the cable. Check adjustment and tweak until the line is centered.

Is it me or does that sound overly complicated??? It's a very easy procedure, just hard to explain. Good luck...

Dave

well the thing didn't have a 2nd gear it was eaten up in all the 60mph down shifts into 2nd. so the truck was smart enough to hold it in 1st so that it wouldn't bog out going into 3rd.

THIS WASN'T MY TRUCK. I WOULDN'T DOWN SHIFT INTO 2ND AT 60MPH.
