Subject: 4.7 cam HELP!!!!!!
IP: Logged

Message:
I have an 04 QC 4.7 dak, last Saturday I put a set of HO cams in my truck witch was easy but when I got done and cranked my truck it was running rough at idle till about 1000 rpm. It's not like a miss but just rough as heck then I got a P0300 Multiple cyl misfire code. It runs like a raped ape past 2500 but boggs below 2500. I don't feel that I have bent a valve, but this weekend I am going to run a comp. test and see if I bent a valve or have a cam out of time but other than that I am at my wits end. If I can't figure it out I am going to put my factory cams back in. Could it be the dumbsh@t NGC controler and non NGC cams? Anyway please any suggestions would greatly help. Thanks

Did you possobly skip over a tooth on one of the cam sprockets. I zip tied my spockets to make sure they didnt move. Might just want to make sure all your hoses and stuff are plugged back in first. Its easy to miss a vaccume line.

Maybe you knocked one of the rockers out of place. i did that when i did mine years ago and caught it on the second cam as I was putting the VC back on... !!!!

needless to say I re-pulled the DS VC to look to be sure all rockers were in place before i turned the key.

Ya,,,I'd say a rocker or rockers may not have been seated correctly,,,but I would think you could hear it. May have messed up the cam position sensor too on one side. It's pretty easy to smack it when doing the cams.
- I had a rocker or two that weren't seated right and didn't notice till I was putting the vc's back on - like Chris. Glad I caught that.

But it is not a dead miss the ecm can't even notice one individual cylinder missing on a cyl balance test it's just generaly running like crap.I was thinking it's like a bank is out of time slightly but I can't see how I did that when I never removed the cam gears from the engine.

i would lean towards one or both cams being 1 tooth off.

Let me tell you from experience I have had the right cam out of time 1 tooth and it did the same thing. (CHECK YOUR TIMING MARKS BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE CAM COVERS) Hope this helps

The only way to tell would be to remove your cam covers, line up the cam sprocket marks and the crank timing mark. If you can't do this because you're off a tooth, you'll know what the problem is.
I don't want to ask a stupid question but, you did reset the PCM, didn't you?

Just wondering but don't the 03 and up have the entire HO engine already in them, so no need to install what's already there.

I did a compression test on Saturday and cyl1=130,cyl2=170,cyl3=135,cyl4=165,cyl5=130,cyl6=170,cly7=125,cly8=175. These numbers are rounded because my cheap gauge only goes in 5's. But I believe I have the left cam off witch is the one I did at night with poor light. This would also be the reason I didn't have a cam crank sinc. code being the camsensor is on the right cam. What do you all think?

Sounds very possible... I would re-check the timing of that cam as the cam being timed wrong can definitely bleed off more cylinder pressure.

Based on your compression checks, the left bank cylinders all read low. That's where I'd start.

Guys, sorry to pull up an old post but I am having a problem which is very much related.

I just did head gaskets on my 02 4.7 and put the HO cams in while doing the job. the truck runs great around town but nail the throttle and around 4000 - 4500 rpm it falls on its face and misfires. Could I be off on the cam timing by a very small amount? And if so, how can i get it back in time...

If it runs fine at all other rpms, it's not the cam timing. Could ba alot of other things, especially since you were just in there.

Does it really run fine at all other rpms, idle well, etc? If not, you could be off on the cam timing. The sensor for the cam could also be off.
Sure hope someone doesn't tell you to 'check the rotor and cap'!

Well last night I pulled off the cam cover and ran it to TDC to check the cam timing and I could see the timing on the driver side cam was a tooth off. so I pulled off the cam gear to find that the pin had pushed itself under the cam gear and made a dent in gear. So now I have to try to get the pin replaced and its a good thing i happen to have a spare gear. in looking at it, i can see that the pin was too short from the beginning, i know i had it seated right and torqued properly so thats really the only other thing that could have happened. So I will be heading to the local machine shop this morning.
