Subject: 155 Code O2 heater element?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey all,

I'm getting a check engine code of 155 that says that there is a problem with the heater element of the O2 sensor.

A couple ? for those who know.

There appear to be 4 o2 sensors- Do all of them have a heater? How do I tell which one is the problem so I can replace it. I can do it myself if I can figure this out. Hoping to avoid the dealer!

John

If it is a 4 wire sensor it has a heater, which I'm sure yours do. Should be a black, gray and 2 white wires. The black and gray ones should be the heater wires. I can't remember the P code numbers and the specific sensors they relate to. Maybe someone could help you there with a code list. Or, you could unplug each harness connector and ohm the heater on each sensor, if you have a DVOM (digital volt ohm meter). Just check the resistance between the black and gray terminals on the sensor plug. I can't remember the value but if you have some resistance you should be ok. If it says OL (out of limits) or there is like a million ohms of resistance I'd say that's the bad one.

Thanks Dave,

Good trouble shooting to look into. With what you mentioned I should be able to tell which one has gone bad. Some other info that turned up searching this site was:

Copied and pasted directly from DC tech website:

P0155-2/1 O2 SENSOR HEATER FAILURE
When Monitored: With battery voltage greater than 9 volts, at a cold start, ECT less than 147°F, battery temperature sensor equal to or less than 27°F, and engine at idle for at least 12 seconds.
Set Condition: O2 sensor voltage greater than 3 volts for 30 to 90 seconds.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

OPEN FUSE
O2S HEATER FEED CIRCUIT OPEN
O2S HEATER GROUND CIRCUIT OPEN
O2 SENSOR RELAY

And:

4.7L California Engines: On this emissions package, 4 sensors are used: 2 upstream (referred to as 1/1 and 2/1) and 2 downstream (referred to as 1/2 and 2/2) With this emission package, the right upstream sensor (2/1) is located in the right exhaust downpipe just before the mini-catalytic convertor. The left upstream sensor (1/1) is located in the left exhaust downpipe just before the mini-catalytic convertor. The right downstream sensor (2/2) is located in the right exhaust downpipe just after the mini-catalytic convertor, and before the main catalytic convertor. The left downstream sensor (1/2) is located in the left exhaust downpipe just after the mini-catalytic convertor, and before the main catalytic convertor.

P0155 deals with the Bank 2 sensor 1

I'd be checking the right side, upstream O2 sensor following the info you provided.
