i just bought a 1997 dakota club cab with a 4 inch body lift on 31's great body other than the aqua color, its a 4x4 but the guy a got it from didnt know how to switch it into 4 wheel drive, im not even sure it works, anyone know how to pop it into 4x4, its an automatic and i dont know at what speed to pull it back into 4h, any help will be appreciated. im also considering removing the body lift as the truck has been wrecked before and puttin a new lift( it seems to have wooden blocks for some of the lift cylinders! thanks.

First thing is how's come you bought a truck and didn't test the 4 wheel drive? Sounds like the seller is covering something up. He doesn't know how to put it into 4wd???? If the truck has the owners manual it will tell you all you need to know. Plus I think on the 4wd's they print the directions on the sunvisor. (I could definately be wrong on that) 4L is usually at under 5mph and 4H I think you can do at speed but I'm not sure(I want to say up to 35mph???). And there is no aftermarket lift kit that should come with wood in it. At least not that I know of.

I also have a 4x4 dakota 400hp+ you can shift into 4x4 at any speed under 55mph or even at a dead stop. It is not recommended that you drive over 55mph in 4 wheel drive however I have plenty of times all the way up to 80mph and more 4x4 launches then I'd like to mention with no adverse side effects so far with 120000 miles on it lol.

P.S. I forgot to mention make sure your back wheels come to a complete stop before you try to engage 4x4, for example if you are stuck in snow

As far as the 4L goes, make sure you put the truck in Neutral BEFORE you try to shift into 4L, for one, it shouldn't go into 4L while in gear, but if it does, your gonna grind off more gears than butcher does beef! ... I would have been a little concerned (actually wouldn't have bought) if I seen someone used wood to lift the truck up... show's signs of carelessness and a half-a$$er.... anyhow, just my 2 cents, no offense meant by that.
