Subject: Lost of oil betwen changes
IP: Logged

Message:
I started having a problem with a lost of oil between changes. Enough oil to where I loose preasure when I come to a sudden stop after about two months.
The other problem is that I have No leaks when parked. No leaks found when on the rack. Not burning oil. Not in Trans, or Antifreeze fluids. So, where is the oil going? I canot make it between oil changes with out adding 2-3 quarts of oil? I am Stumped? Can anyone help me figure this one out? Thanks Rex

look through the TB into the manifold. it could be the "belly pan" gskt. something cheap to try first is a new PCV valve.

It's probably your belly pan gasket on the bottom of the intake manifold. When it goes bad, it starts sucking oil vapor from the crankcase. You might have a mild leak, only enough to cause increased oil comsumption. When it gets worse, you'll have knock/ping of your engine and decreased gas mileage, accompanied by severe oil comsumption. How many miles on the engine and have you ever replaced the belly pan gasket?

I have never seen this happen on a 360 (which I presume is what is in your truck), but I know that the ford 4.6 modular motor is suceptable to a kind of twisting of the piston rings when they're flogged hard enough. It was especially prone to happen in the earlier mod motor mustangs. I don't know if the same thing has been known to happen on the 360 or not.

That said, I agree with the "try a PCV valve first" idea. They're cheap and at the very least it won't hurt you.

If it wasn't appearing to burn a lot of oil, particularly on startup, I would also have suggested valve guide seals, but that would seem unlikely in this case to cause the consumption that you are dealing with. Aside from that I have little experience with the 360.

Check for a blown plenum gasket. Very common. If it is blown fix it and see what happens. If you still have low pressure warnings you could have a bad sender. They have been known to fail. Also the oil pickup in the pan can also get clogged. If you have a lot of miles it may be partially clogged. On braking it will trip a low oil pressure warning if the oil level is below normal.
