Subject: Oil refineries?
IP: Logged

Message:
This question does not deal with a specific Dakota problem, but certainly affects all of us with these rising gas prices.

I hear the economist's say the main problem with rising oil costs is supply vs demand, and that the USA has not built a oil refinery since the 1970's?

Does anyone know the real reason why the US has not built additional refining capacity, and if there is any plans to do so in the future.

Thanks!

This topic is being discussed Off Topic in this thread.

Check it out. You'll have to overlook a bunch of trash from certain posters, But there is enough info there for you to get a good idea of why we are in this overpriced gas situation.

thank the epa and environmentalists for no refineries being built. even if they did start building one it would probably be 3-5 yrs to complete it.

so what's your point?

Me,

no point to be made, I guess you do not know the difference between a statement and a question.

Jerry,

It depends who you talk to. The reason given for not building a refinery are many, i.e. it would cost anywhere between 4 and 8 Billion dollars to build one and the return is not worth the investment, people do not want them in their town; due to the fact besides a waste water treatment plant, they are one of the dirtiest factories you would ever see, the EPA guidelines are so strict that nobody wants to touch them and also the oil refineries are working at full capacity right now and every bit is being used, the oil companies would rather not have that surplus to make the price cheaper which would mean lower profits (still a profit though) for them.

Yeah, some people may refute these statements, but I looked it up and found many articles, each saying these things and more. I just don't want to take up too much space explaining. It's not a political party issue at all as some would say. No one party is to blame. Fuel consumption has gone up tremendously since the 70s and we don't have nearly as many refineries as we used to have. I think the number now stands at about 149 refineries.

Hope this helped. I'm sure I'll get called some kind of right wing (or maybe even left wing) nut, but I don't see where I put the blame on any political party.

Well, like I said, it's from articles and studies I read about. I have been curious as to the problems, so I decided to research it and that is what I found. Is it true? Maybe, maybe not. Like I said before, probably just depends on who you talk to.

Yeah that sounds about right obiewondak. I have been stuck in that off topic board and it really seems that everyone is eager to point there finger here or there at this political party or that. It is very hard to beleive the refiners are not making money though. As a plumnber I was in a summer home of one of those poor people that own a refinery. the t.v. in the closet was better than my living room set. Killer god I do not know, 5000 sqquare feet of a house this guy uses maybe 3 months at most out of the year in one of the richest area in the world. the house was in La Jolla on top of a hill overlooking the ocean. There is profit in refineries but the profit margin would go down with increased production. Not totally a right or left caused problem.

I agree too that it isn't one political party or the other. Afterall think about it. How many people know someone who know's someone who had a relative with a car that made bucho miles per gallon and bragged about it. Then they took it to the shop and suddenly got crap milage.

Why hasn't gas milage increased as technology increased? Why can a Cadillac get 30 mpg with a big 8 cyl and boat loads of power but a much lighter "fuel efficient" car only get 30-35? Seems there is a bit of a reason we are where we are.

IMHO I think the oil companies, auto makers and politicians are all in this togather. Otherwise our pickups would be in the 25-30 range (min) at highway speeds (not the hwy rating of 55 max) and small cars like a neon would be getting 45-50 and large cars like caddy's and town cars would be in the 30-35.

Just something that bothers me. Cars and pickups used to get the same milage. Now cars have increased (slightly) but trucks haven't. I don't think the gear ratios and areodynmanics are that big of an issue I think there is another reason and it is due to someone getting paid off to look away.

Sounds like the posters here are alot more knowledgable than the ones posting in the of topic board. I have to agree with what people are saying here.

I can tell you one thing though. If I hear of a new refinery going into place, I am gonna dump every single penny into the owners stocks. The statement about the refinery's being at full capacity is 100% right. We have "lots" of oil, but no way to turn it into end products.

hey Crow318,

I'm not sure that putting money into the refineries would be the way to go unless it is owned by a major oil company. They are very expensive to build and maintain and from what I've read, aren't as profitable as people would think. I know you probably made that statement in passing, but figured I'd throw my "two more" cents in the mix.

Yeah, and you're right about the off topic boards. Seems everyone there doesn't want to be themself, they are parading as others. Now that I say that, there will probably be a post on here from someone pretending to be me.
