I have a 1999 Dakota R/t and wonder if someone can tell me if my rear axle has a 3.55 or 3.92 gears. I've read forums where they say both were used in different years, and as far as I know, mine is stock. Also, which would give me better gas mileage?

You have an R/T? If its a true R/T then you have 3.92s 3.55s will help in gas mileage a little bit.

Your axle ratio should be listed on a tag in the glove box. Worst case, check manually by lifting the back of the truck off the ground and spinning the driveshaft. Mark the shaft and wheel.

The 3.55 will not always give you better mileage. YOu you look around here, people have changed their 3.55's to either the 3.92's or 4.10's and gained a little mileage. If you do alot of around town driving and stop and go, the 3.92 will get you better mileage. Highway mileage is a toss-up some get good with the 3.55's and others get good with the 3.92's

Well on highway I can garrantee the 3.55s are better on the LA based motors...I have three friends who have 3.55 and changed them to either 4.10s or 3.90s like I have and all of them at 70 mph at least dropped about .5 mpg.

In the city my gas mileage is better I went frok avg 15.3 depending on my foot to about 15.9 or so.

When you have a lot of tire you need a lot of gear!
