Subject: O2 sensors?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have always kept my truck up to "tune" with fuel
treatments, spark plugs, air filter etc. Now at 101k was thinking it wouldn't hurt to change the o2 sensors,(especially now with raising gas prices) what i wanted to know is what would you recommend factory or aftermarket? anyproblems with aftermarket o2 sensor? brands should be used?
thx!

The factory parts lasted more than 100,000 miles, how much better do you want?

For what it's worth, I'm getting mine replaced by the dealer. I have a great customer service guy who goes above and beyond. If anything were to happen, I know this place would take care of it. Guess it depends how good your dealer's service department is. I got the codes of P0161 and P0442 from the computer. New gas cap took care of the P0442 code but I need the O2 sensor for the other. After market is ok, but if it goes bad, will they honor any warranty? It's just a matter of who you trust more.

OK, if that offends you, I'll say it another way. Get the factory replacements.

As for being worthless, I'll remember you said that and try not to answer any of your questions again.

Have you thought about removing the 2 sensors and cleaning them with some good contact cleaner?

I personally would not change them unless I started getting codes or had some reason to believe they were bad.

Because of the way O2 sensors work, don't use contact cleaner, or anything containing petroleum products. They can leave a residue, and then you just might see some codes.
If you feel you have to clean them, just blow them out with some compressed air and reinstall them.

JimmyD,

What do you think about using electric contact cleaner? I don't believe that has petroleum products.

I think that is what I used and did not have any problems.

The galvanic O2 sensors installed in our Dakotas produce electric current by chemical action. If you feel confident that spraying chemicals into the sensor cavity is the thing to do, go ahead.

But if having clean sensors is important to you, why not get new ones?
Those are as clean as you can get.

I would suggest running the truck to operating temp. Take only the forward sensors out with kevelar gloves, because it will be very hot. Take a spray bottle of water and hit the O2 a few times with the water. Trust me, it will not crack. The carbon will. Then take compressed air to it. Leave the rear sensor. The computer on 2001 and older v8's only used that term as a completed circut. Either way the cleaning, or buying new ones will probley not make any difference.

I would definately recommend replacing them. They may still be working but they do get lazy, Go to the dealer and get factory replacements. If you have to go aftermarket, buy Bosch. I would not recommend cleaning them. 101K??? It's time.
