Subject: chattering with superchips, 4.7
IP: Logged

Message:
I have an 03 4.7 dak 5spd and have noticed that i get valve chatter when shifting in between gears or udner a heavy load. It happens on the 87 octane program and 91 program, and the chattering goes away completely if i take off the superchips and return my truck to stock settings. It only happens if the engine is completely warm. Would getting cooler spark plugs or a 180 degree thermo. solve the problem?

Sounds like pnging. Hopefully you just got some bad gas causing the predetonation. Maybe run that gas down and try premium from another gas station.

Thanks for the reply, I thought the same thing about the gas at first but it happens everytime it gets hot no matter what station i use. I still have the factory plugs with 47,000 miles and know i need to change them because its running a little rough, could that be part of the problem?

I have the same problem on my 02, on both the 87 and 91 programs.

I plan on putting in the 180 stat when I change the coolant. If that doesn't work, then I'll try changing to a colder plug (3923)

try colder plugs first. if that doesn't eliminate it then change the t/stat. if it still pings try some Seafoam through the TB to clean the combustion chambers. if carbon builds up in there it will tend to hold more heat in the combustion chamber and cause premature detonation.

What do you mean by heavy load? Because if you have the performance program installed, and are towing/hauling a heavy load that will cause it also. I had the saame problem when i was towing a durango on a tow dolly. You just have to be careful to try and keep the rpms up a little higher while up-shifting.

What i meant by heavy load is like when i am going up a steep hill and not downshifting so the rpms stay low and im on the gas a little more.

When mine does it, it is usually most noticable around 3-4K rpm at about 1/2 throttle

Ok I re-tuned my truck and I still have a slight pinging problem even after putting in new autolite 3932 plugs, they helped a little but the problem is still there, interesting side note, as i took out my orignal plugs i saw that they were bosch platinum, I didnt think platinums were recommended for the 4.7? Anyways im going to try puttin in a 180 degree thermo to see if that stops the pinging completely.

my truck sometimes pings under wide open accelleration with the 87 octane program installed.... I haave 3923s i, and a 180* thermostat... no help at all... it really does it after coming out of second gear into third at WOT.. I tend to back off, it's kinda scary pinging like that..

The truth of the matter is, the 180 stat runs HOTTER then the stock 195 did! it opens at 180, I just dont think it flows enough.. it didn't seem comstructed as well as the stocker did, the 195 will go back in soon.... on cooler days it stays around 180 degrees with normal driving, when it's warmer out it gets up around the 195+ range (I've had it over 210 before)

Heat in the heads is a major contributer to detonation. There are other factors, of course, but that's a big one. Cooler plugs are slightly helpfull.

Going to a well built, balanced 180* thermostat and adding a surfactant (Water Wetter) will really help to pull some heat out of the heads. Mr. Gasket makes a nice thermostat for the 5.2/5.9 that can be adapted to the 4.7.

CAI will also help a little.

I have the same problem with pinging in my 03 4.7 automatic with both the 87 program and the 91. Only under WOT at 3500-4000 rpm. I run 93 octane with the 91 program and 89 with the 87. Changed spark plugs with OEM Champions at 30,000 miles.Problem disappears when stock program is installed. I wondered if a 180 thermostat would help as well. But who makes a 180 stat. for the 4.7? Do I need to send the programmer back for warranty? If it was just minor pinging it wouldn't be a problem but it is very pronounced.

Hmm. Mine only pinged when I used the 91 setting on 89 fuel. 91 octane cleared mine up. I do have a 180 t-stat but it IS hot here.

180 t-stat is the same as the older Magnum engines. The same as in it DOES fit. But you have to cut a notch in it for the gasket and I hear there are some flow issues with certain ones.

Here's some pix I took back in the day :)

This is the OEM t-stat.
It has some sort of extension on the back though. Someone said it closes some bypass port or something. May not effect people in warmer climates. No Check Engine Light here from it.

There's a 3.9/5.2/5.9 t-stat modified to fit.
