I have a 2001 CC 4.7 auto with 80,000 miles on it. Earlier this week while driving 65 MPH on the freeway, I noticed a slight hiccup, like the tranny slipped or something. This morning, it did it a lot worst, this time while going about 30 mph. This afternoon, the MIL came on and it hiccuped a bunch of times. When I got home, I pulled the code P1391, which is intermittent loss of cam or crankshaft position sensor. Anyone else experience this? If so, what was the solution and how much did it cost. Thanks in advance.

Riley

What's the history of the vehicle? Any recent maintenance or other symptoms? Have you checked these connectors for corrosion or reseated them?

Replace the cam timing senser about $40 at your dealer (cost). I have a 02 4.7 With HO cams and manifold. This senser controls about all of the timing and firing of ign. If you know a friend with a 4.7 switch senser and try it. Need a 10mm wrinch located under right front cylinder head.

I've had no problems with my truck until this happened. I haven't done any maintenance on it recently since the last oil change and tranny fluid change. Also, I have no mods.

Hi everybody! I'm new to the forum, and I'm having a similar problem. I would appreciate any input.
I had the engine rebuilt on my 2000 Grand Cherokee 4.7 It cranks, but will not start and gets a p1391 code. The cam and crank sensors checked good, but replaced them anyway. The timing marks on the crank and cam gears line up properly(Could've been the rebuild)The manual says there should be battery voltage to the connectors at each coil. (I get it for a second, then drops to zero)I've been dealing with this for some time now and it's getting frustrating.
1)When I pulled the engine, there were some connectors to the trans still installed. Gave it a few hard yanks before I realized it was the harness. Would any trans sensors keep it from starting? I'd hate to replace that entire harness unnecessarily
2)I bled off the A/C to pull the compressor. The schematic shows a low A/C pressure switch sends a signal to the PCM. Would that keep it from starting?
3)The ground wire to the PCM (black coated)I connected it to one of the engine hoist studs. Is that the proper ground? Would that keep it from starting?
Any ideas?
Thanks
Steve

I have a 2000 Dakota 4.7L That is rebuilt and
has 1800 miles on it. I've changed the oil and filter twice. Once at 950 miles and again at
1760 miles.
Last morning it started missing and backfiring at around 2500+. If I increase the rpm's to 2900 or above it smooths out again.
Also it now has a noise on the passenger side head
area.
Any Ideas?

Sounds like the motor was not broken in properly if the valve
train is making noise already at 1800 miles.

I was fighting with similar issue in the last 5
weeks, the problem starts when I replace the
crankshaft position sensor. I went to 5 different
shops and none could fix it, after check vacuum
leakage, timing, wires and connections I decide to
replace cps again and get a Mopar part. The code,
hesitation, misfire simply disappear and truck is
alive again.

I,m working on a 2002 Dodge Dakota. We just did a
complete engine swap and now the engine hesitates,
back fires and will not stay running when you put
it in gear. I get 5 volts at the sensors (cam &
crank), so I'm open for suggestions...

I had the same thing with my 3.9 v6. The detonation and rattling on the highway should have made it non-drivable but I didn't attend to it soon enough. The detonation was fixed by replacing the crank sensor, but I was left with an engine knock and low oil pressure from bad connecting rod bearings. I had to find another motor.
