Subject: 97 speed sensor location?

Hey all,

have a 97 4x4 auto, just did a v8 swap with a 99 318 and harness. Are the 97 42RE trannies/transfer case equipped with the speed sensor? Actually I believe it is in the transfer case. Is this correct? I am trying to hook up the wires through diagrams but am having trouble. I know the speed sensor is in the rear diff. for the later years, but does anyone know for sure if the sensor is in the transfer case on a 97?
I am also pretty sure the tranny is a 42RE as they offered the hydrolic and electronic versions in 97 depending on the production date.

Thanks for the help, I need to get it going so I can use the O/D.

I also have a trouble code for the solenoid A in the tranny, so I am assuming I have the RE tranny. I have been told to replace the governor pressure solenoid to fix this trouble code. Anyone else have this solenoid replaced? Plan to do it myself, just not sure if there are multiple solenoids there or if this is the main one which is bad.

I have a 97 4x2. Speed sensor is in the tranny case but may be in transfer case in a 4x4. My tranny is a 44RE (beefed up 42RE. The 99 pcm will be looking for a speed sensor signal from the combined abs/speed sensor located on top of the rear diff. (major change made in 98) so if I have correctly understood what you wrote this may be a big problem area.

There are other solenoids (overdrive solenoid for sure anyways) in the 44RE besides the governor pressure sensor. If you got the code, list it. I may be able to zero in on which solenoid it is. If it is the gov. press. solenoid, it's attached to the valve body so all that is needed to be done is to drop the pan to get to it.

Hey

Thanks for the response. The trouble codes I got after the swap were

P1765 12V Relay Control
P0753 Solenoid A Shift Solenoid (Electrical)

I have since jumped the tranny relay in the relay control box by the battery and the truck does not die anymore if I drive it around town. I think it now has the 12V to the tranny. I also had to do this to get the A/C compressor to work (problems from using the 318 wiring harness).
So I think the tranny is receiving power now and is still in 2nd gear start up due to the solenoid problem. I can manually drop it in to 1st and shift on my own, but 3rd is the highest it goes and no O/D.
The speed sensor may be a large problem now...if the harness is not wired to plug in to the sensor, I am not sure what to do. If the 99 has a speed sensor in the rear diff then where is it wired to?
Should I add a speed sensor to my diff and wire it in like a 99 or use the wires and connections from my 97 harness to plug back in to the sensor on my transfer case and then tap in to the computer?
Man...wish I could have found a 97 318 w/ low miles but this is how it goes I guess. The truck runs great, I just need to figure out my solenoid problem and get the wiring figured out! The dealership in Des Moines, Iowa, where I usually go told me to go to AAMCO to get their help in wiring it back together. I know it will all work out, but it may mean getting a diff tranny. But this still means getting the speed sensor going which must work to enable O/D.

Hopefully someone here can help me. Every transmission store, parts store, and dealership has told me to use online forums to get help in my case. So far so good. I love this site, just hope someone sees this and has an answer!

Thank you all for the help!

Evan
