I know the '96 auto. PCM fits in the '97 and I can't see any reason why it would be different for the manual one. Because of a completely wiring design and intro. of LED speedometer) in '97 from the '96 though, all the gauges (temp., battery, gas, tach, speedometer, odometer) in the dashpod will not work. Also, the empty fuel gauge lamp and another one (cannot recall which one at the moment) will light up. Those non-functionals just mentioned will be the same for a manual.

My bad :-( Meant to say that the odometer is digital but rest are analog and lamps.

Nevertheless, the analogs will not work. On the 96s, all the analogs were wired directly to their corresponding sensors. On the 97 Daks and up, they get their signals from the Central Timer Modeule at the end of pass. side of the dash via a bus. The CTM gets signals from the PCM via a bus. Hence the reason for all the dash gauges not working. A 96 computer will not know a CTM is there. This is from personal experience with an auto. (found out the hard way in 98) but the dashpod wiring design i.e. intro. of the CTM is the same for a manual. Check a Haynes manual or FSM for your 97 for a CTM.

BTW, if you had a 96 PCM on a 97, the other lamp which will light up, besides the Empty Fuel lamp, is the Security lamp.
