Subject: 4.7 liter oil change
IP: Logged

Message:
Just want to get some opinions on changing oil on the 4.7 liter engine.

The owner manual calls for 6 qts. of oil with the filter change. When you do this it appears the dipstick is about a 1/2 quart high.

I am considering just putting in 5.5 qts to bring the dipstick level to the full mark.

Anybody got any ideas on this?

Thanks.

Make sure you start the engine..let it run bout 25seconds to bring the oil pressure up and fill the oil filter, the shut it off and recheck it..the level should be at the full mark now...
the owners manual says 5.7 liters is the capacity
and has been right on the money when rechecking after start up....cheers from canada...

I think that it can vary vehicle to vehicle.
My owners manual says 5.7 but with filter and all I have about six and a half quarts in mine at full mark.

The owner's manual is only close on this one.
When it's oil-changing time, I buy 7 quarts, Because I'm running with an oversize filter. When I have 6 quarts in, I start it up and let it run for about 15-20 seconds and shut it down. Then I wait about 5 minutes and read the dipstick, adding oil to bring the level to the full mark.

I put in 6 qts. and forget about it. Mine has always read perfect and even if it was a little over, I wouldn't worry about it. I service medium duty trucks for a living and I can have 2 identical vehicles that will have slightly different oil level readings. I found that it has to do with how tight (or far down) the manufacturer installed the dipstick into the engine.

5.5 quarts and mine is good to go. 6 makes mine about 1/2 quart too much too.
