My '96 Dak w/ 5.2L has the same erratic idle problems as described in the 'Erratic idle' post from .boB, along with some other frustrating faults.

Sometimes the engine will be at a normal idle and then independently rev up to around 1200rpm. Sometimes it dies when I shift from reverse to drive or when I let off the accelerator at a stop. Other times it doesn't start without pumping the accelerator and once it does start it dies if I let off the accelerator. This problem is temporarily resolved by cleaning the IAC and TB every few months. It also gets lousy fuel milage (14mpg at best) and seems to have less power than when I bought it in '01.

Every time I check the trouble codes, I get a 12 which Chilton says is a power disconnect to computer. I've also recently been getting a cylinder misfire code, 43.
Has anyone been able to resolve similar problems?

My '01 dakota 4.7L also has an erratic idle. Cleaning the TB is a temporary fix. Everyone I know that has a V8 dakota gets between 14 - 15 mpg.

try a fuel pressure guage, find out if your getting sufficient fuel delivery, under load from idle to redline. then check if your injectors are all working, and not clogged. i believe you should have 12 ohms from pin to pin at the terminal on the injector itself, and use an injector cleaner fuel additive to clear the nozzles(dont use any more than it says because you will kill your o2 sensors). if that don't work, you'll need to check into your injectors by removal and inspection.
sounds like an atomization issue at idle from; failing pump; dirty fuel filter; injector dirty; or injector failure.
good luck.
