Noticed several months ago my 2004 Dakota Quad begin to shimy and dart when you hit rough spots at 55 to 65 mph.Took it to dealer, replaced rack and pinion and tie rod ends. Done better, but noticing now that the shimy is coming back, not as bad but still evident on rough hiway. Took it back to dealer and they said they couldn't find anything wrong. They said that shimy was typical of rack and pinion sytems.

Shimmy is not typical of R&P systems. Just the opposite, they tend to be more stable and accurate throughout the range.

I would check the shocks first. Then take a look at almost anything in the suspension. Even a worn rear springs shackle can do this.

Good call on the rear spring shackles .boB ...I'll second that diagnosis!

That's actually my next upgrade, when I get time. I've already got the Energy bushings, but it's going to be a pita on the driver side ...the gas tank shield is in the way of the front mounting bolt. Also have to drop the trailer hitch to get at the shackles.

like stated earlier, any looseness in the steering or suspension can cause it. you can also help put it in check by addind a steering stabilizer - a shock added across one of the front steering bars (sorry - I dont know the name of the part)

Tires can be the source of the problem also. Try swaping your tires front to back and see what happens. Also, be sure your tire pressure is correct. Never overlook the easiest things first.

Thanks for the advice guys, I did swap tires on the passenger side and did not seem to help on that side, but I did notice that both tires seem to be slightly out of round. When I jacked up the truck, I spun the tire and it rubbed in one spot. The one I took off the front seemed a little worse. Is this typical of all tires or should they be perfectly round? We have 20,000 miles on them.

Tires shouldn't be out of round, but it isn't uncommon for that to happen. I ran in to that with Porsche. They balanced out fine, but the car still had a shimmy. The last place I took it to actually noticed the out of round tire on the balancer and replaced it. The shimmy went away. If you've ever locked up the brakes and skided there;s a good chance that you've created a flat spot on the tires also.

Also, poor alignment can cause the tires to wear in an unusual ripple pattern that makes your tires out of round. You usually won't notice it until it starts causing your vehicle to shake because the tires are bouncing rhythmically from being out of round. You'll also notice an oscillating noise like you're driving on knobbies that are out of balance.
