Ok, I've read many things here about people putting on alternate fans and removing the mechanical. Here's where I'm at. I have a 2000 5.9L with tow package (meaning in addition to the clutch fan it has a small electric fan on the radiator that turn on both by thermostat or when the AC is turned on). I put in the 180 t-stat, but all that does is lower the lower end of the fluctuation, so now instead of going back and forth from 195-210 during stop and go, it goes between 180-210. Well, when there is a noticable increase in gas mileage when it stays low, so I want to keep it low! Right now the clutch fan and electric don't kick in until around 210 or so. Can I perhaps replace the electric with one of the aftermarket ones so that it kicks in at 190 or so, is efficient enough to remove the clutch fan on this engine, and will still come on with the AC? If so, which fan and how do you wire it? Thanks. I suppose a lower temperature clutch would work too, but that fan is awfully loud.
BTW, it normally gets in the 90's here in Sacramento, and often above 100, but it has been a cool summer so the numbers above have been during 80's temps.

You have a couple options. The smaller electric fan is not part of the tow package. Every Dak I have seen has one. Used with the AC mainly to help promote cold AC.

Pull off the clutch fan and mount a new high volume electric fan. Best choices are a viper fan or a Lincoln MarkVIII fan. Check out www.socaldakota.com for the viper. He sells complete kits with all wiring/relays needed to mount up in your truck.

Cheaper option is check out www.car-part.com or ebay and buy a fan from a Lincoln Mark VIII. This fan actually pulls more air than the viper, and is roughly the same size. Then go to www.dccontrol.com and order one of their fan controllers. You will need to fab up your own mounts for the fan, but that should not be too hard. You will also have to relocate some coolant bottles, etc.

Either way you will pull far more air and keep the truck running cooler. You will also have greater control over the fan as well.
