I have a 1993 Dakota with the 5.2L V-8. The truck runs great with 115,000 mostly-highway miles.

About a year and a half ago, the truck got to where it would just shut down and after letting it sit for a few minutes it would start back up again with no problem. The truck was losing fire to the plugs. Initially it may only do it a couple of times a month but soon it became a regular problem.

I was looking into the problem and left to serve in Afghanistan for a year. Upon returning, I found that the problem was getting worse..... FAST! Soon, I couldn't count on it to make it to the gas station down the road.

After replacing the coil, which had a small crack in the housing, I was certain I'd fixed the problem. Immediately, I found out I hadn't. I started checking around and it appeared that my problem was in the Ignition Control Module. No problem, I went to NAPA. The guy went looking through the book and we found out that in the fuel injected model I have, the ICM is located inside the computer.

I began shopping around and one was nowhere to be found at any of the local salvage yards (prices ranged from $50-$75). I went back to NAPA and they carry refurbished ones for $191 with a $150 core charge and a 1 month warrantee (as opposed to about $400 with a 3 month warrantee).

To make this shorter, that was my problem, the computer. However, upon installation, the check engine light stayed on and the voltage meter in my dash spikes up and down with dimming and brightening lights. I checked my Haynes manual and it appears that with the fuel injected models, the voltage regulator is also located in the computer. Looks like I got a bad one. I'll be going back to NAPA in the morning for an exchange.

I'll follow up and let you know what happens with the exchange and whether it is better to just spend the extra $$$ and go with a new unit.

In the meantime, while you should always check with a mechanic before replacing those expensive parts, the shutdown problem, in my case, was caused by a faulty computer.

Well, on Tuesday, NAPA already had my replacement on hand. I changed out the computer and the truck now runs like a dream. No stalling, no voltage spikes.... whoooohoooo!
