Hello all,
I own a '92 dokaota, 5.2-8cyl, 4 wd.
I am experiencing a bucking on the highway at approx 65mph/2000rpm. There is no fluxuation on the tack. Not that noticable with local driving. No problem with excelleration.
I have had the transmission rebuilt 2x with in the last year. I have also replaced plugs & wires, cap & rotor, volt reg, fuel pump, pvc, air filter and cleaned injectors.
Does not miss/buck under excelleration
Any ideas....Help!

I had a similar problem a few years ago with my 88 Continental. It was very annoying and I never did diagnose or fix it.

I found this, maybe it's useful (read the 'Tech Tips' article)

This article hints at a failing fuel pump in the first paragraph.

Thanx man
I will check it out.
I tend to think it's in the distibuter because the fuel pump was replaced within the last year.
Do you think it could be as simple as replacing the crank sensor?
Has anyone else experienced this?

have you checked the timing chain? or the distributor?

From what I can comprehend in the first article, I would first try loosening the distributor and turning it 5 or 10 degrees either way and test run. Then try back in the other direction. See what happens. This only affects the injection pulse synchronization which should make no noticeable difference on engine operation.

But mark the initial position just the same.

Good luck.

I have a '92 dakota also 5.2 V-8 4x4 and it does the same thing to me. I'm not mechanic or know much about cars so I'm shooting in the dark. It's not the tranny or engine. Fuel filter or pump sounds good to me but If anyone can help me figure this out as well it would be greatly appreciated. E-mail me at schmidty20042001@yahoo.com if you can help or get me help. I'm fed up with it!

I had a similar problem a few years ago with my '92 5.2 2wd, can't quote MPH or RPM anymore but it sounds the same. The way it was explained to me was that the factory drive gear on the distributor shaft was rough, this wore out the top of the bushing down in the block that the shaft runs in, giving it excessive clearance and allowing the gear to float up and down on the shaft when you are cruising and there is not much load on the gear. This caused the engine to "surge" at cruising speeds. Under acceleration or deceleration the gear is thrown one way or the other and no surging is seen. My mechanic replaced the bushing and gear (roughly $300) and it hasn't happened since. I'm at 212000 right now, like to get a new Dakota but this one won't die.

i had the exact same prob w/ my 93 5.2 4x4 it bucked at 65 in (od) or 45 in (d) the problem was one of my spark plug wires was hiting the exaust manifold and got burnt. it didnt look bad but i found the prob when i touched it. it didnt happen under acceleration like the distributer gear causes. go to the parts store and replace your wires its only 20 bucks and your truck probaly needs them anyway

IF it does it at idle its the pcv valve. Chryslers are a little finicky when the pcv system isnt working properly. costs 3-5 bucks and its easy to change out. check to see if it works if not, its not wasted money. theyre supposed to be replaced with every tune-up anyway. A bucking in the truck could also be caused by driveshaft out of balance or tires out of balance have them checked. Btw you cant check either by yourself. you need a balancer machine.

I've got the same problem on my Dakota. '99 5.2L 4x4 Auto. Problem only occurs when I let up on the gas after acceleration and cruise. If I let up on the gas completely, it goes away and it gets worse the faster I go and it also does not occur under 45mph. It almost feels like I'm hitting bumps on the road, but it is definately bucking like you stated before. I would like to know for sure how you fixed it. I don't like the $300 idea above since I don't have the money right now. Does anyone know if it will get worse or I might just tolerate it until a solution is posted. Thanks in advance for all the help.

BTW, I just got a tune-up and replaced the DC, Wires, Plugs, PCV, Cap & Rotor. Also replaced the speed sensor on the tranny which fixed my shifting problem. None of those fixed the bucking problem however.
