Subject: 00 Dakota headlight problem

I wrote in a while ago with this problem and I did receive an answer, but the problem is still there. The problem is that the right headlight is dim. I have replaced the bulb and have checked out all the grounds that I could find. Does anybody have any ideas? Does anybody have a wiring diagram they could email me? It would help me a lot. Thanks all.

Does it seem dim to you from inside the truck or from looking straight on from the outside? If it seems dim from inside from the drivers seat there may not be anything wrong. The right and left lenses have different reflector patterns to disperse the light differently.

Or it it seems dim from the outside..... This may seem like a dumb question, but is there any condensation in the right headlight assembly? Also, in the daytime with the lights off does one lense appear clearer than the other? I've noticed in the past with other cars that a "dirt" film will get on to the inside of the lense making the headlight appear dim. Another thing to check out is the LEFT headlight. Is it possible that it is a higher output than the right? One last thing I can think of is to check the voltage output at the bulb plugs. The left and right should be the same (obviously). If not you may have high resistance in the power wire for the right bulb which isn't uncommon since the right side usually has a longer travel from the power source to the bulb.

Thanks for the reply, There are no problems with the lenses, they are both the same. I haven't had any problems with condensation either. I agree with you that it is a high resistance, either on the power wire or the ground wire, but to try to trace them without a diagram is next to impossible. The light output was normal, as far as I can tell, a few months ago. I don't do much driving at night, so I really don't know when this started. Not that I am cheap or anything, but I don't want to take it to the dealer unless I have exhausted everything I can do.

Wiring can be a bitch! The Haynes manuals have a good set of wiring diagrams in the back section. They're cheaper to buy than the factory manuals. I just sold my Factory service manuals for the '00 models (since I don't own a Dakota anymore) otherwise I would've scanned the hl diagram and emailed it to you. Maybe someone on here can do that for you.

If you want the factory service manual on CD cheap, go check EBAY.
