Ok now I'm embarassed, I let a cavalier beat me. We both came off a light and I got out in front at first but after about a hundred feet he got away from me. So I guess it is time to do some engine mods. I have a 2000 CC 4X4 4.7L (stock engine) What are suggestions for my first first purchase? Keeping in mind $ to HP being very important due to my limited budget. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hey guy, I dont have a Dakota yet but I will have one soon. But I do know that some of the more effective mods are your intake, headers, and exhast. Be it Airade, K&N, or Intimitator; flowmaster, borla, or gibson; edelbrock, JBA, or mopar performance. One suggestion would be www.speedtweeks.com. In their performance kits section there are 4 kits from $500 to $1300. The best value will probably be kit 3. It has the intake, a TB, tstat, headers, and exhast. So shop around for the best price, but thats what to look for.

I noticed you are in the car audio bord, so when I do get my truck, I will be lookin for some adio advice. Goodluck, and happy hunting!

Skip the Headers if you are on a limited budget. Go for the gibson cat back and due a self made intake with a K&N cone. That alone is only about $300 to $400 total. Also get the IAT adjuster from speedtweaks - $35 Depending on your driving habits and climate, you can do 180 T-Stat($8) and remove the mechanical fan(free). Set of 5224 Autolites are about $8 and I know a blind monkey who can install plugs, not very tough. A DOHC head with a 6 inch recess, a little different. Was the Cavalier modified? I hope it was at least a Z24(150hp) or I would be up the dealer's butt about my engines output. Just goes to show, 5spd...Gotta love it

I don't know what he was running but it was very quick. I know I am going to do an intake and cat back, I think I will get the intake soon, and the exhaust next. question about home brew intakes, I was wondering if it could melt? I saw a site on it somewhere (I think it was speedtweaks) and they had melted one. I was just curious about how that would affect my engine. I also thought about the IAT Adjuster but where I live we have regular e-checks and I don't know how illegal it would make me. Any further suggestions / commentswould be helpful

I doubt it had NOS. Pronounced N-O-S, not "nas", damn I hate that part of fast and the furious. A Z24 is not slow in 5spd trim. They could probably pace a 4.7L auto and with a few mods, pull away from it. Only reason he beat it from the line is the torque advantage after that hp and the weight difference come more into play. Weight off the line matters too, but torque can overcome that. Anyway, sprayed Cavs are pretty rare, and pretty gay. I feel sorry for some people, don't they know they are buying crap?

Oh no! Not the Nitros Oxide thing again! How about NOS is a company name, like Kleenex or Vise Grips, that became the popular way to name the system. Maybe N20 would be better. I'm sure the guys over at Nitros Works would think so! But then again so do other makers of facial tissues whis people would stop calling them Kleenex. So how many products out there can you nane with the same identity problem? I'll start...
Velcro, Jeep, the two I already said, and I'm already drawing a blank... For a long time Coke was really common but I think Pepsi is breaking ground. Personally I always say, "I'll have a Mopuntain Dew." Maybe someday everybody will just ask for some "Dew" when they want a soda. Personally I hated about ever part of the "Rice and the Frivolous"!

there is a punk H S kid at my work that has a '98 mitsucrapi eclipse 4cyl with a stupid f&f wing on it. I raced him out in the county from a dead stop with my '97 5.2 dakota 4x4 and puled away the entire time, by the time I hit 80 he was 4 car lenghts behind. he can beat his friend's '02 caviler 4cyl ecotec. I also raced a '00 4.7 dakota 4x4 that we just took in on trade and beat it,(not by as much). It's amazing what a few mods will do. I highly recomend the few mods I made totaling around $750.

Turn your key to the start position when you reach the speed limiter and hold it there. your starter will not engage but your instrument panel will shut down but your truck will keep going until you turn the key back. It is very easy to peg it at 120mph.

I recently learned not to race an import project, I got my a$$ kicked, and I mean hard. We did a 1 mile run, when I hit 3/4 of a mile he crossed the finish line. I almost started crying.

It was a Toyota Supra with NOS, Super charger, flowmasters, 5-inch pipe, it was a humbling experience.

As much fun as it is "eatin rice" You have to be careful about your decision of who to race. Some of those guys slap on a 20lb turbo and an adjustable wastegate and get about 300hp in a 2500lb car. My first vehicle was a Eagle Talon TSI and with nothing more than cold air and an adjustable wastegate, I naver dyno'd it or ran it in the 1/4 but I beat all the "5.0's" in the area. In fact just last week I ran across a mitsubishi eclipse that ate my lunch. (Not happy about that one at all) Anyway just my 4.7 cents.

where i live (nothern wisconsin) there's a few rice burners, but alot seem to have punk kids for owners and all their mechanical knowledge comes from watching the fast and the furious.is a four foot wing really necessary on a '97 four clynder eclipse, a '86 thunderbird, or a '96 cavlier (not even a z24). you don't see too many high-end imports around here much less one with engine mods.

Grady, if you think NOS being pronounced as "Nas" came from F & F then dont move to SoCal. People here have called it "Nas" for years.

As for imports you do need to watch out. After my "dak" (sorry i mean DAKOTA so were all on the same page here) i picked up a 92 Intergra rs from my buddy, when i got it from him it had an LS (1.8l NON-VTEC BLOCK) with a b16 head (1.6l vtec head). it had 10.5:1 pistons for a total compression of 10.8:1, the b16 head adds .3 to an ls block. The head was stuffed with a complete Type R valvetrain including intake manifold and a 54mm throttle body, thats stuff plus a fuel pressure regulator and a Skunkworks ECU.

That combo was good enough to blow the doors off my dak. the car revved to about 9000+rpm with peak hp about 8500 and was good for mid-high 13's on the street.
Dont get me wrong I LOVED MY DAKOTA and will LOVE the next DAKOTA im gettin in 6 months or so, but there is somethin to be said for a car that looks almost stock( only ext mods you can see stock wheels from a diff. year integra, an old school QUIET HKS exhaust with only 2.5 tip, and it was onyy lowered 1 inch for drivability with not a wing in sight) anyways.. almost stock looking but on the freeway could pull away from SS Camaros, Saleen Stangs, NSX's. ALL those are actual kills SO WATCH OUT, not all import drivers are punks with noisy coffee cans.
oh and watch very closely for the SUPRA's. A supra with $1500 in mods can run low 12's all day

I saw something really funny the other day.....Some kid had a shiny brand new 6" exhaust tip on an old beat up RX-7 that was primered OVER the dents...It was also dropped a little. The funniest thing was watching him pull out of a parking lot and scraping and horribly denting the bottom of the exhaust tip... The tip couldn't have been more than a couple of days old....Then after he pulls out, he floors it, and a huge cloud of smoke spews forth from his engine and the noise that comes out is the sickest sounding buzz and rattle I have ever heard. And meanwhile, he had a smirk on his face when he turned and saw that I was looking....He then nodded his head and proceded to pollute the airways. And at a mind numbing 10 miles per hour, he tears a$$ and goes on down the road........Oh by the way, he was the DIRTIEST, FUNKIEST, YELLOW TOOTHED, UNWASHED, REDNECK I have ever seen......Which just makes this whole story even more funny.....
