i got an estimate on getting my heads ported an polished an it came out to $450 with me taking my heads off and installing myself. i'm wondering if this is too much or a decent deal. it seems like a bad deal to me but i wanted some other opinions.

sounds about right. however, i need to ask. are you boosting? if not then the port-n-polish work wont net you outstanding gains like you may be hoping for. you may see some gains if youre running an aggressive cam. but if the motor is basically stock, youve wasted some money.

i'm going with a new cam and roller rockers. i won't be boosting it until i can get some money saved up. for that price on the port an polish would it be better to just find some aftermarket heads, an if so do they even make em for a 95 318?

forgot to mention i also have the m1 intake manifold and long tube headers. i'd love to take it to the track, it's a 95 dak cc 5spd LSD 3.92s an i know it's quick but i work 60 some odd hours a week an my days off the track is closed. (bastards) i'll get there eventually i'm hoping for at least low 15s.

$450 is too much money. For your set up, you don't need much. All you want to do is smooth out any rough spots in the chamber, and get rid of any casting flash in the runners. Get a set of sanding rolls from Eastwood and a drill motor and do it yourself. It's time consuming, but not technically difficult.

Won't the new Edelbrock heads fit your engine?

i thought the edelbrock heads were only for carb engines like the LA family an not the magnums. got any prices on em or a website for them? that sounds like a sweet deal for a 318. i've got some edelbrock heads on my camaro with a 355 an it made one hell of a difference. then again that's a good ole hot rod motor with a huge cam an a victor racing intake manifold.

Check with www.hughesengines.com They say they are made for the '92-up 5.2/5.9 magnum. Also, check with www.edelbrock.com

For a mild street engine porting and polishing isn't too hard since your just cleaning up the bowls and runners. Get a die grinder (electric or air) a couple of carbide cutters, a bunch of sanding rolls,,, and a little advice from your local machinist.

I'v done several sets of heads and it's not too hard, but DON'T get carried away with the carbide cutters. Also, port match the intake and head runners and don't "polish" the intake runners, leave them sanded (fuel likes to bead-up and stick to shiny surfaces.

I bet if you searched the internet you could come up with a butt-load of information on porting and polishing. $75-150 for tools and a Saturday will have the job done ;-)

The only thing going thru the "intake runners" is air. The fuel is injected directly into the intake port at the head.

I had a hard time transitioning from carbed engine theory to injected engine theory too.

DOH! How's about this,,, Don't polish the intake runners in the heads, but polish the exhaust runners in the heads.

Guess the way I wrote it was a bit confusing...

In a recent issue of Mopar Muscle, they had a tech article called Magnum Head Massage. They port a stock magnum head and do a valve job, comes with flow numbers and such. Its the July 2005 issue, it says display until June14th on mine, so you may have to call the magazine to get a back issue. This should be a big help

It wasn't confusing. I'm saying that it doesn't matter whether you polish the intake runners or not. We have port fuel injection. If it were a carb or tbi system then you would be absolutely correct. Most all articles and books are written for carb engines.

Polishing the exhaust ports is a great idea for any system.

The 95 is no different than any other magnum 318 other than it has EGR. You can get the new Edelbrock aluminum heads which were just released for the magnum engines. You can also get a set of Mopar RT heads, either 1.92 or 2.02 sizes. Both options are significanly more expensive than cleaning up the stockers though.

You could get a set of Magnum heads from a junkyard( price ??). Port and polish those yourself and keep the others as a backup. Another option is to save up the dollars and and buy the new heads.

Approx. Head Prices from Mancini Racing
Mopar Performance cast iron (set) $800
Edelbrock aluminum set $1200

Either way, I would like to get your feedback on difference in performance.

ok, i went ahead an did a mild polish on the heads...not alot of difference but under wot is seems a little smoother throughout the rpm range. might just be me but the exhaust sounds like it's change a bit. probably just my thinking though. anyways thanks for the advice. anyone know of a way to get this truck to hook up a little better? i've got the LSD an 3.92s an kuhmo tires, but unless it's fresh concrete or sand paper i can't hook up without feathering the clutch/throttle to no end until late in 3rd gear. i've seen the cheapo lakewoods but i don't think they'd help much i figure they're just good for wheel hop. anyways sorry for the long post guys i know we're trying to get some sleep...erm work done

Porting and polishing is one of those small things that add up to big numbers, I would be surprised you even noticed a change with only this mod since it should have only given you a couple HP and TQ.

port polish, 5 HP
headers 10 HP
cam 10 HP
timing PCM 10 HP

Each of these mods don't make a bunch of power, but combined they do make a bunch of power.

How much work did you do when you polished the heads? Port match the intake to head ports and head to exhaust ports? Remove valves and clean up bowls? Tear drop the valve guide bosses?

Hooking up, what size are your tires and how much air pressure are you running? I had 295/50/15's on a 350 S-10 and would run about 10# of air while racing. If I had the tires pumped up all they would do is spin. Launching, I would have to keep 1/2 - 3/4 throttle for about 20-30' then hammer down. I also had Lakewood S10 traction bars. I had to modify them to work with a Ford 9" rear end, maybe they could be modified to fit a Dak. They did help with axel wrap and keeping the tires planted.

well i've got long tube headers minus a y pipe for a foot or two until it runs into the x pipe. then dumped before the rear axle. oh two flow master 40 series. still not loud enough though. up top i've got a m1 intake, k&n. i've got a comp cam with 1.7rrs. for spark i have msd, taylor wires (don't like em) and autolite plugs. i replaced the clutch fan with a electric one. thinking about finding an electric water pump as well. i plan to boost eventually but i'm waiting until this thing will die on me. 141,000 miles an it hit the redline at least twice a week without a single problem. as for tires i've got some cheap kuhmos an when i trot around saturday night they sit about 19-20psi...but they're really just street tires an doesnt seem to make much difference on pressure. i'm thinking of relocating my battery and getting a fuel cell to sit further back in the center. but that's time consuming an my green back stack is a little slack. geez this is too long i gotta go do something productive...like sleep.
