"Flash" is a type of memory that retains its contents even when it's powered off (unlike the memory in your PC). Almost all automotive xCM's have some.

In most circles, "flash" can also be a verb, meaning "to program the contents of 'flash' memory". Typically, this is done to change the operation of the xCM.

Hope this helps,

Larry
