Subject: v6 to v8 swap
IP: Logged

Message:
the other day i bought a 1997 standard cab, 2 wheel drive, v6, 5 speed dakota for 400 bucks. The engine is on its last leg. I want to put a v8 in it b/c i have a 1985 carb 318 and 904 sitting in my garage. What are my options for the swap, ie will the engine bolt right up to the motor mounts and manual trans or will i have to use the automatic, also i have all the motor mounts from a 1995 318 dakota that i did an engine swap on but i noticed on the 85 block there isnt the 3 bolt holes on the side where the 95 318 mounted to its motor mounts. Any help and info would be great. I only have 700 to spend and i will be doing all the work my self.

my suggestion would be sell srap or trade the 85motor & the trans cause you will want to keep the manual for gas milage, find a V8 dakota in a junkyard & jack the motor and wiring harness but scince you straped for cash just enjoy the gas milage your getting know and keep saving that way you get somthing better like a crate 408 from krcperformance

motor wont just "bolt up"..

that LA motor has different style mounting system than the magnums.

that wouldnt be that hard since you could get a V8 genI (shelby)

magnum blocks have newer engine mount bosses but also retain the older LA style boss'

Doing the carb thing initially, for simplicity. Plus, I love carbs. However, I have also been snagging OBDI stuff, again, for simplicity over OBDII that came with the 360. (With my luck, the smog police will suddenly decide to make issue with 1989 Dakota smog compliance.) On the Gen1, I've read here-and-there about wiring, splicing, etc, but I think the best approach, or at least the easiest, is to piggyback the Magnum system and let it run like it would on a non-computerized vehicle. The Mag PCM handles the drivetrain management, while the body wiring remains essentially untouched. I can see eventually getting the Magnum PCM to do all the work later on. Luckily, having the cable-driven speedometer keeps that from being an issue, but swapping in an instrument cluster from a '92-'95 would also bring easy compatability. Anyway, going carb makes all that a non-issue at this point.

well as i have said, i have the whole 95 truck sitting in my back yard
so if swapping the instrument cluster makes everything work jsut like it did on the 95 then so be it
i looked at the wiring harness that plugs in throuhg the firewall and they are the same plug, but the pins are different
so i dont know what that would mess up

Well it's not quite that easy. My reference to the cluster swap just meant you would be able to read all info from the Magnum PCM, including the tach. There will be some splicing to get the Magnum signals to the wiring in the bulkhead, or maybe swapping the under-dash wiring would be better. Honestly haven't looked into that. Once I got the carb-required necessities worked out, my research kinda stopped, but I guess I should look into this for future mods.

second sugestion custom fab the motor mounts use the carb and the manual trans, so the speedo will work
custom fab a wiring harness for the starter you could even make it a push button start, will need a new distributor, buy a tach from autozone, eliminate computer. will need the basic gauges oil presuer-water temp- voltmeter, and that should be the chepest way to go

and how will the electronics that go from the tranny that hook it to the engine work out?

its the same transmission that is in the 318 dakotas
there are no electricals it will fail eventualy if it is pushed but should provide trouble free service for quite a while
i mean its an 1985 carbed smog 318 it cant be making more than 180-200 hp tops especialy if he is just going to drop it in
