Ok, so after reading through these forums, and my current tstat going bad (so I need to change it asap!) I went to get a 180 this time to help with the ping (2000 Dak QC 5.9). When I went to get it, the guy at Napa recommended I don't do that as it would "mess with the computer". Is this true? Should I still do it or go get the stock tstat? THanks.

the only thing that may happen is you'll get a code (P1894 i think) for engine running too cold for too long. if that happens the only problem you'll have is a drop in gas mileage.

I was kinda hesitant also, but have had no problems. I like seeing that temp gauge stay down here in AZ. Also seems to run smoother.

You will not have any computor problems with a 180, if you go to a 160 then you may have issues.

I tried it on my '01 5.9 a couple of years ago. It sucked. Fuel mileage dropped, and idle quality was poor. So I put the original one back in, and it ran great again.

Then I used a Hypertech programmer, which really improved power and mileage. But it did cause some pinging at WOT, and with heavy trailer towing. I had to be sure I used premium whenever I hooked up the trailer. So a few weeks ago I put the 180* thermostat back in, and added a bottle of Water Wetter. Cured the pinging, and it runs great on mid-grade fuel. Additional power? No, don't think so. But it runs better.

When you replace the thermostat, be sure and drill a small hole in the plate. That makes bleeding the system a whole lot easier.
