Message:
Has anyone changed the plugs on a 2001 4.7liter? I used to do my own work on cars but the new engines are so packed it is harder to do. So I want to save some money and do my own work but I was hoping someone out there may be able to provide me some tips before I attempt this cause it looks crowded and I want to avoid removing stuff.

Thanks

Did my 2000 4.7 a couple weeks ago, it's alot easier than it may look. I replaced with Autolite 5224s gapped .040 and this is the procedure I followed:

Have the same set up and did mine a couple of weeks ago. Easiest vehicle I've ever had to change plugs in. The only kicker is that you have to remove the huge air cleaner assembly, but other than that it is simple. You will need about a six inch extension.

yeah changing my plugs in my 03 was real easy. it just seem to take a long time because I didnt gap the plugs before I started. also when you have your air hat resonator off. be a good time to clean your TB.

if yo uwant a hard vehicle to change the plugs in. try the 95 ranger 2.3 4 banger. it has 8 plugs in it also. but is the most pain in the ass setup to change plugs in. took me almost 3 hours to change the plugs in it the first time.

Thanks everyone...I changed the little buggers last night; no problem. I went with the Autolite's, we'll see how they work out.

I went with the regular autolites in my truck. couldnt find the one range cooler plugs. been in for about 2,000 miles and the engine still runs smooth. unlike the champion plugs that was in it. they made my truck run rough and got poor gas milage. maybe dodge shouldnt say dont use plats but dont use champion copper core plugs. because they wear really bad.

Can anyone advise as to which plug to use, the copper or the platinum. I really don't know which one is recommended for the 4.7.

Ahhh ...the great copper vs. platinum debate!

I chose Autolite 5224 copper, my truck is completely stock. I don't think you can make a really big mistake either way.

The 5224 is the manufacturer's recommended plug but many people have found that the 3923 is a very smooth running plug. I had a set but changed to Iridium plugs because the 3923's wore the electrodes too quickly. The Iridiums gave me a .7 mpg improvement too. Nothing to write home about but every little bit helps. Of course if I had to pay full retail, Iridiums are too expensive. I got a set from a seller on eBay for $48. They retail for about $13.85 each. The 3923's are usually .99 each.
