What engine? If it's a 5.9, then it's probably a lifter going bad. Sometimes a heavier weight oil is helpfull.

I was just about to post the same problem and then saw yours. I have 99,300 miles on mine and it just started the other day. Loud clicking when cold but after I drive around for a while it's gone. I'm wondering if it might be a sticky valve? My serpentine belt needs replacing...could it be a pully? I figure if it was a pully it wouldn't go away after it's warm.

It shouldn't be piston slap, 4.7 is engineered for fairly tight tolereance there. But you knew the dealer was lying anyways, right ? Could be a lifter.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Sounds like a valve lash adjuster. Seems to be common for the 4.7. Mines been doing it for about 20K miles or more. They aren't that difficult to replace, but you will need to get a special rocker arm removal tool to do it or the cams will need to come out. I don't know that it is a real issue though until it gets to the point of ticking all of the time.

Figols: is this the occasional 'ping like' noise that you asked about in your thread? Did you solve that mystery?

My '00 4.7 has a faint tick when cold also, has been doing it since new. I've heard other vehicles with the same noise and I agree with the lifter/valve lash adjuster theory. I would guess it isn't a major issue as long as it doesn't get worse.

Now piston slap on the other hand, IS a major issue, one that gets worse rapidly until you are left by the roadside with your engines' guts trailing back a quarter mile or so!

Good luck.

CHANGE TO A THINNER OIL. SOLVED MY PROBLEM. SEEMED LIKE IT TOOK A FEW SECONDS TO GET THE OIL PUMPED UP TO THE LIFTERS, WAS RUNNING 20-40 NOW USING 10-30.

John K, I still have the "ping" and it's getting worse. It's not in the engine, but I haven't been able to determind if it is tranny related or something else. Ofcourse I haven't really had teh time to check it out yet either. It's one more thing on top of a long list of problems with this POS truck! It's been a POS since new! I think I'm finally done with it and I'm trading it in this month(not for another Dodge!). On top of the "ping" I just had my rear u-joint fail and my LSD is shot. And that's just scratching the surface. I'm a machanic and it takes quite a bit for me to walk away from a problem, but there's too many problems with this truck that has NEVER been abused! No burn outs, racing, off roading yet it still is falling apart! Nice job Dodge!!! I've never had this many stupid problems with any vehicle EVER, car OR truck.

beavernuts, I was told (by the technician) when I bought my truck new to only run 5W-30 in the 4.7 because the tollerances are very tight and the oil ports are very small. Thicker oil could starve the 4.7.

Figols: sorry about your bad luck, I've owned my fair share of 'money pits' and have many times cut my losses and sold (or gave away) a POS car. I've had no shortage of problems with my '00 4.7 4x4, but they have been manageable and relatively minor to date. Better luck with your next vehicle.
