Subject: Check Engine Light when Spark Plugs Chng
IP: Logged

Message:
Ok anybody have this problem. I Just bought a 2000 Dakota with the 4.7l engine. truck ran fine but it has 80k miles on it so I decided I would change the plugs. Changed the plugs now the check engine light comes on and gives the P0442 error code. I have checked the gas cap. Thats not the problem. Anyone have any idea what I could have done in changing the plugs that would cause this?

That code indicates an evaporator purge system small leak. I would go over all the hoses and fittings in the area where you worked and make sure all the connections are tight. You might have knocked something loose when changing the plugs.

Also reset the code by turning the ignition to run, but not engine start, and disconnect the battery for 10 seconds.

you might have un-knowingly unhooked one of the hoses that runs to the purge solonoid.. it's on the driver's side firewall, next to the throtle body. check all the hoses on it, and the little green cap on top as well.. that's about all I can think of that you might have bumped when changing the plugs.. it could also just be a coincidence that a hose elsewhere failed/slipped off..

GOOD LUCK!
