Let a pro do it. Find a reputable shop that you can trust...don't automatically go for the lowest install price. Ask to see how they do the work. And if you can, find someone who has had a gear change at the shop and ask them what they think of the work. There is more to it than removing old parts and installing new ones...if it's not set up properly you'll be looking at premature wear and failure of the parts you just spent so much money on. But a properly done gear swap can last the life of the truck.

It's not so much a question of whether your stock 3.55's will hold up as it is a question of whether the driveshaft(s) & axle(s) will hold up.

Think of it this way: You can have 3.54 gears in a Dana 60 axle, and 3.55 gears in our 9.25" and 8.25" axles. The gearing is the same, but the axles are way different in their structural integrity. A Dana 60 is definitely superior to our 9.25" and 8.25" axles. Hence the Dana's popularity in the off-road & high-performance circles.

I'm not too sure about the 8.25" axle (haven't read that much about them), but I know the 9.25" axle will hold up to super-charged 4.7/5.9. Hell, I've seen MOPAR cars/trucks pushing in excess of 400hp using the 9.25" axle.

As for the gearing, my suggestion for your case would be to start keeping track of RPM's & your 4.7L's powerband. What you want to do is keep your rig running at standard speeds at the lower end of the powerband. This gives you the ability of going WOT and having the ability to "tap" into your rig's powerband for the power needed to pass someone or motor up a hill. What you don't want is to be cruising along at, say, 60mph at the top of your powerband. Not only is this going to kill whatever gas mileage you currently get, but it will leave you with no "ummmpff." This could be the case if you go for too low of gearing (numberically higher).

Hope that helps...if not, drop a line & we can re-visit this.
