Well guys dont get me wrong I love my Dakota but its time for something with a little more power. Ok alot more power im looking at getting a cummins turbo diesel. Love the power ratings and cant beat the torque. I will admit the fact that i got blown away by one in the 1/4 mile this weekend is influencing my decision. Any input????

Depends on what you plan to do with it. If you need HD hauling and towing, the cummins is the hot ticket. Couple that with the 6 speed manual and you have a driveline that will pull a house of the foundation and easily run 150K+ miles.

However, if you need a daily commuter, it doesn't make much sense. Way to expensive to purchase, insure, feed, and maintain.

If you "need" a faster truck, it makes more performance and economic sense to modify the smaller lighter Dakota.

I've got a turbo cummins in my Ram and also the Dakota. Trust me.... the Dakota is MUCH more fun to drive! Trying to park the beast is a chore at times also. (4x4, Quadcab, Dually Ram)

.boB I wouldnt go as far to say if you need a faster truck that the dakota is the way to go. My business truck is a 2003 duramax, and with the banks six gun it is putting out probably well over500 hp,and 800 ft lbs of torque at level six. If you look past the initial cost of the vehicle, and look at it in the long run, a mid 13 second diesel that gets about 550 miles to a tank is not that bad

It is truly amazing how much untapped power is in the diesel engines. Especially the more recent ones that benefit from good power programmers. If you can afford it get one. With fewer bolt ons you can get a real fast truck, even if it is bigger and rides rough. I still like the Dakotas strictly from a size standpoint, and it is kinda hard to find a good diesel for less than $14k.

Heck i dont even know where you can get a good diesel FOR $14,000. Not a newer Gen one with decent miles anyway.

For the best in stock power and easy mods power, the Cummins would be pretty tough to beat. There's a lot of torque available in stock trim, and adding 50-75% more is reasonably inexpensive and easy to do. But the entrance fee is pretty steep, around $40K new.

I think - but could be wrong - but the most economical power for Chris would be to modify the Dakota that he already has. Have you priced a Cummins lately? I considered trading mine up to a Cummins, but the cost is prohibative. To upgrade to a used diesel ram with the same mileage and condition as my Dakota would be $8-10K. Add another $2k in mods. Don't forget taxes. Think what you could do to a Dakota with 1/2 that money. And you're putting all that power in to a vehicle that weighs 1,000# or so less.

There's more than one way to skin a cat. Trying to save money and go fast at the same time is a difficult proposition.
