Subject: C&D Tests 5 Small Pickups!
IP: Logged

Message:
The June C&D tested the Colorado, Ridgeline, Frontier, Tacoma, and the Dakota V-8.

I was shocked to see that the V-8 Dakota could only best the 5 Cyl Colorado in the performance tests and it was 1.4 sec slower that the first place Tacoma in the 1/4 Mile! It only beat the Colorado by .2 of a sec!

I did not expect the Dakota to win overall against the Japs, but I did expect a better showing on performance, since it is the only truck with a V-8.

Now hook a couple ton of trailer to all the trucks...

The Dak is much heavier and has a payload capacity near the TOW capacity of a weenie Colorado.

i agree with caulk04. hook trailers to all these trucks, and dump like 2 or 3 tons on them. guarantee the dakota will come out winning now.
unless its a r/t, its not built for racing. and a pickup truck in my opinion, is not a HOTROD anyways. trucks shouldnt be rated on how fast they do a quarter mile, but how much they pull, and how far they can go pulling it, along with other capacities.

Friggen' instigator...

All trucks were QC's, loaded versions.

Perhaps there is a reason it is CAR and Driver, they picked the Ridgeline as a winner due mostly inpart to its car-like road manners.

The Dak got high marks for its handling, they gave low numbers for the V8 that didn't run like one (not verbatim, but thats the implied message).

I don't agree with these comments "hook trailers to all these trucks, and dump like 2 or 3 tons on them. guarantee the dakota will come out winning now". Why would you say that? The new Tacoma and Frontier V6s make within 3% of the torque that the 4.7L Dodge makes, have more horsepower, and the Tacoma and Frontier weigh less. And the 4.0L V6s even have similar power curves to the 4.7L V8, with strong torque down low because of the variable valve timing. The technology in these new V6s make them just as strong as our V8 Dodges. The base 4.7L Dodge motor is an underacheiver at 230hp and 290lb-ft; in my opinion Dodge should only sell the 260hp HO version now to keep pace with the competition. I know that I'll be installing some HO cams in my 2004 Dakota!

i'm not siding one way or the other.. but the idea behind that is a V8 with 290 tq is gonna make it a lot sooner than a V6 that gets any where near that...

wasnt the nissan an extended cab and not quad? or am i thinking of the motor trend comparo?

also, they have a full size truck in that comparison, the honda is a 1/2 ton, not a mid-size.. but doesnt make it any less ugly.

Motor trend did a similar comparo between all the trucks in 4x4 form and seemed that the dakota got beat by a little in each 1/4 run.. but the dakota also weighed 1000 lbs more than the fastest truck and had a bigger tow capacity.

here's the facts, if you want to buy a truck that goes faster than a 16 second 1/4, dont get a quad cab dakota.. lol

Greg, I know you know alot more about engines than I do, so I'm not saying you're wrong, but... In another car and driver test, they tested the new 300C SRT8(My new favorite car) with a 5.7 Hemi bored to 6.1 and the the torque actually peaked at a higher RPM, so more cubes doesn't always equal lower torque curve. Why? As for the small truck test, the Dodge was actually tops according to a few of the guys involved. Problem was some of them hated it, so the average went way down.

I have a 20' toy hauler, with the tongue it's 24'. It weighs 4200# empty and has the front profile of a parachute. I would never consider pulling this with anything less than a Dakota. Magazines and import lovers can say all they want about engine size, 1/4 mile times, gas mileage and such, but I want some power and weight in my tow vehicle. I'd rather not find myself pushed off the road by a trailer that controls my truck.

i'm not saying it in comparo with it being just more cubes.. but more like V6 to V8.

the 5.7 hemi peaks 375 tq @ 4400 rpms while the 6.1 peaks 420 @ 4800 rpms..

what do you think the 6.1 is doing at 4400 rpms?

more than 375 for sure

check out this example of what i mean.

colorado I5 225 tq @ 4000 rpms
dakota 3.9L 225 tq @ 3200 rpms

which one do you think is gonna pull a load better?

dakota 4.7L 295 tq @ 3200 rpms
colorado I5 225 tq @ 4000 rpms
tacoma 4.0L 282 tq @ 3800 rpms
nissan 4.0L 284 tq @ 4000 rpms
hondah 3.5L 252 tq @ 4500 rpms

The dakota has it's peak torque where it needs to be for a truck.. and from the graphs i have seen, that 295 is a pretty flat torque curve while the other motors have to peak as high as 4500 rpms to even get into the 4.7's working range.

i give the tacoma props for only needing 3800 rpms to get that kind of torque... but what the hell was honda thinking of putting a V6 motor in a truck thinking it can make towing duty??

4500 rpms??? my lord!!

and something also not to forget..

the closest rival to the (05) dakota's 7500lb tow rating is the taco's 6500lb.

that's a big difference... and for the taco to get that, you have to not only order their premium engine, but their tow package, their TRD package and their receiver hitch.

Just wanted to clarify for IntenseDak39:
dakota 4.7L 290 tq @ 3600 rpms (2004/2005 models)
is not very different from
tacoma 4.0L 282 tq @ 3800 rpms
nissan 4.0L 284 tq @ 4000 rpms

The V8 might have more torque than the V6 at 1500rpm, but I bet it's not much; those V6s are pretty big.

If Dodge would just quit stalling and put a Hemi in the Dakota already, this whole discussion would be a moot point. We'd all just be sitting here with smiles on our faces.

Read the name of the Magazine, "Car and Driver" and the reason for the results seems obvious. Their test was based on road manners, overall acceleration, fuel milage, stuff that makes for a great car. They are not as concerned with how well it performs as a truck as much as some, I think they would be the first to admit it. Fact is that most people use them around town like cars and never come close to using the full towing capacity. I love Dakotas and use mine to haul stuff and offroad some, but i like that it uses less gas than a ram so it is a good truck for me, but the other trucks in the test filled the requirements or standards a car magazine has better. A 4x4 magazine probably would have had different results, but we cant be mad because a magazine though a truck would work better for its target reader than another.
