Subject: Tranny pan stuck?

Message:
I have a 94 Dakota 4X4, 5.2L, auto and I want to change my transmission fluid, but it looks like the Exhaust/crossmember is in the way of about 4 bolts towards the front of the tranny pan. I haven't tried taking the pan off yet, I just wanted to get some feedback as to what to do. And also, this is the greatest website regarding Dodge Dakotas!

I thought tha same when I went to change my tranny oil and filter. This was a while ago but I think we got them off with normal combination wrenches. It wasnt very hard at all.

i did the same thing to my 93. i used a wrench, and when i got all the bolts loose, you will notice that the pan will NOT come out. you need to disconnect the front drive shaft, maybe lift up the tranny(disconnect the mount bolts) and it will come out sideways. obviously you need to move the driveshaft up when you unbolt it. do that, or you can drop the exhaust. my way is easier.

Jay, you were right...I had to unbolt the tranny mount, jack the transmition up a good two inches, and use a pry bar to carefully "bend" my exhaust out of the way just to get the pan out. What a pain!

The absolute MOST stupid thing Dodge evir did! Talk about IGnoRamus engineering: DODGE had PLENTY room to rout that pipe just a scosh further out to clear the pan, but NOOOOO-I had to jack the engine to drop the pan, & it now has started leaking!!!. TYhats ITTT I am giong to ACME exhaust & havin them CUT the dam pipe & weld in a go-around so next time it will take me 10 min to drop pan. PISS ON YOU DODGE on this one! Other than that my 93 5.2 CC auto 150k mi on ORIG ENG & TRANNY still runs like scalded dog & is faster to 100MPH than my 01 4.7QC

I once asked a shop how much they charge for a fluid and filter change, and they said something about cutting the crossmember to get the pan off. ('93 CC 5.2 4X4)

Well I wound up unbolting the crossmember and knocking it back a couple inches. It was a pain to have to do but worked like a charm. (I do the maintenance)

The next time, I called a local weld shop, took it up there and had them torch off and deburr the forward lip (about 3/8 or 1/2 in. wide) of the crossmember ($20). Problem solved.

Also a ½ in. ratcheting wrench makes it easier to get those bolts under the exhaust.

Remember to pull the dip stick out a couple inches so it doesn't hang up the pan when you slide it out.

I also installed a drain kit.

I forgot to mention, while you've got the filter off:
Adjust the rear band (the front band is adjusted from the drivers side of the transmission housing) you'll need an inch pound torque wrench, a 5/16 “Star” or “8 point” socket (NAPA: NB810), 11/16 and ¾ inch wrenches. The procedure varies between transmissions so you'd have to check your tech manual but is still pretty straight forward.

The lip was actually about ¾ of an inch, I just serviced it again today and verified that. Only the lower portion of the forward lip was needed to be removed.

Make sure you clean off the crud on the crossmember before you reinstall the pan as it will undoubtedly get knocked off onto your gasket.
