I like to start at the heart with a better cam. Higher ratio roller rockers will help, but will only improve what is a very lazy cam profile, though there's no denying the improvement in valvetrain stability, and reduced friction. (You could still add stock ratio rollers in tandem with a better cam profile for the stability and reduced friction). The stock cam has good lift numbers for a torqey cam, but the duration is meager. Increasing both would really help. Mild mods to your stock intake manifold would maintain the grunt power while improving upper rpm. Headers with mandrel bent tubing to that muffler would help. Being a 4X4, I wouldn't go nuts with high rpm HP stuff, so swapping in an M1 would be up to you based on just what you want and how much you want to spend.

I had the MOPAR perf. cam avalable from dealer and perf. computer. This was on '95 5.2 4x2. I was pretty happy with the pair, especally after headers. With a reg cab Dakota and a NV3500 with 3.23 rear I could reguarly whoop any of the 5.0 stangs in this area. Think with 3.92's she'd of taken a Vette off the line.... or my head.

yea im really not tryin to spend alot of money on it. so you think a cam and maybe rockers?? wut cam do you suggest? about the rockers, i read somewhere on here to get 1.6 ratio rockers if you want better gas mileage and 1.7 ratio rockers if you want more performance. i would probly go with the 1.6 since its my daily driver.

To save money, if you want the cam, stick with the stock 1.6 rockers for now. You can add roller versions anytime down the road. Since you want to add a hotter cam, the 1.6 vs 1.7 issue is out the window. Just remember when you do get rollers to get 1.6 ratio, unless you feel the need for a bit more top end power, then go 1.7. With a hotter cam, however, you will need the suggested valve springs, and it's a good idea to get stronger pushrods. Higher lift cam will put more stress on the thinwall stock pushrods, and they'll bow more. The Magnum RT cam as 2003 4.7 mentioned is good, and I like a couple cams from Competition Cams. Unless you want to run premium gas, stick with the stock computer.
3.92's are an awesome upgrade, but having to swap out 2 sets in your case, that's up to you. My '89 Shelby Dak (3.90's were standard) was a sheer terror...well, from 0-30 anyway (seriously, 2.6 seconds...if only it coulda maintained that pace through 80!!!), but the LA 318 was outta breath by the time it hit 50.

yea i was thinkin of gears before but i really dont want to give up any gas mileage. i only get about 13 mpg as it is.
i dont kno if i should put some money into my truck or to just wait till i save up and find my next truck, then make that fast. i want a 2wd 4.7 cc dak with a 5 speed. not the easiest truck to find but i will get it one day when i have the money.
