Subject: MPG gauge accurate?
IP: Logged

Message:
Got a 2000 Dak 4X4 5.9 quadcab and it seems my MPG gauge in the overhead console is not right. Took a long trip recently and the gauge said I averaged 14.8mpg but divide miles driven by gallons needed at next fillup I come up with 16.6mpg. I had reset everything at fillup when staring the trip. Anybody else seen this?

I've got one on a Dodge Stratus and it's just the opposite. Always indicates more than actual.

I didn't even know they made 4x4 5.9 Daks, thats sweet. Did you possibly change the tires or something. Either way it should cost much to get the programming set right. But I'm not sure... I have one of those too but its accurate.

Thanks. I bought it used, don't know if the previous owner changed anything but it's got factory 15"wheels with 31-10.50's seems that would be stock. The spedo seems to be correct.

These aren't generally considered as accurate as doing the math yourself; as you have found.

Mine is very close. 349 miles computer says 19.9 mpg, actual by math 19.5 mpg That few cupfuls of fuel could have been a fillup difference, so I say my computer is accurate.

My overhead always reads about 1mpg higher than actual calculated. The odometer on the overhead is also always off a few miles from the trip odometer on the dash.

Your calculations could also be off.. you said you divide miles driven by gallons needed at NEXT fillup. You need to divide the miles driven by the gallons put in at your LAST fillup, the gas you actually used and drove on. Keep your receipt or write it down. Every gas stations pumps will click off at a different level. Meaning at autoshutoff your tank could be plus or minus as much as a couple gallons from the last fillup.

Sometimes my tank shuts off at 22gal..sometimes at 24gal.

I always fill my tank to the top, until I see gas in the neck, so my calculations on a tank to tank basis are accurate. The truck always takes about 2.5 gallons more after the pump first clicks off. The gas tank/filler are a poor design when it comes to filling to the top!

Hey Leviticus, your way of doing it brings up a question in my mind. If you fill up with, say three gallons in the tank, to have a full 24 gallons, you buy 21 gallons. You drive a certain distance and fill up again to the 24 gallon point and buy the difference in gas according to how far you drove. That could be anywhere from 1 to 24 gallons. You have to measure the mileage on the final fillup. It is the only way. Otherwise you could end up measuring any distance at all against that 21 gallons. See?

Leviticus, I wrote without properly reading, so I apologize for my last post. Disregard it altogether, please. You actually do have it right, no doubt about it. I got thinking on a different track....after all I am choochoo!!!

The discrepancy was all over how the original posts mentions "the next fill-up". Now I have figured it out....he was talking about two different fill-ups, "this one, and the NEXT one".
His math is the same as ours, and he checked his mpg over two fill-ups/two trips.

Again, my apologies.

I think there's too much guesswork in your method Leviticus. How am I supposed to know I've burned the exact amount out that I put in on last fillup? I choose to fill up completly, reset my tripometer, fillup later and that tells me how many gallons I've burned.

Firebird, you have it right. Leviticus has it right. There was a misunderstanding in the way your first post was read. We are all on the same page. Just keep doing the math you are doing and enjoy your Dak.
