Subject: 99 5.2 "no bus" help
IP: Logged

Message:
i have a 99 5.2 with about 93kish, jba headers, cgs exhaust, k&n airkit, jet chip etc etc.
here is the problem, while driving all of the sudden the motor dies, tach goes to zero then a few seconds later the rest of the inst go dead sometimes it starts rite up, othertimes it does not start for sometime. while cranking the motor the odometer flashes and reads "NO BUS", during the stall i never loose 12 volts. ive heard of durango's having the same problem, and its the crank sensor, other things ive heard it is the cpu in the vehical. anyone heard of theis problem PLEASE let me know
thank you

My 99 dakota did the same thing .. check your PCM .. when mine was doing the same problem i found that the PCM was getting very hot .... and for reason it would lose connection with the rest of the truck as if it got unpluged.... even marty at KRC at the time couldnt tell me what was causing the problem .. i ordered and mopar PCM and have had no problems since ..

the headers are cool, i wished i testpiped the truck, but i heard a rumor about if the o2 sensors before and after the cat trip out, the truck shifts funny. if installing the headers get the metal gaskets, and use i think it is the copper gasket sealer, and alot of patients, it took me and 3 others about 3 hrs to uninstall the exhaust manifolds and install the headers, also get some header heat wrap and wrap them especially next to the a/c compress. my headers are like a 1/16 away, kinda scetchy. but they are awesome, u notice alot more bottemend torque. after everything ive done i raced a friend with a 99 5.9 r/t and kept with them no problem, couldnt pull them, but we were practly side by side. good luck

You should be able to find a used PCM at Car-Part.com for under $100 - I got a used one for my '00 a couple years ago for $80. Might be less, generally cheaper as you go older. That could be the problem; "no bus" is an electrical communication failure problem, could have other causes too.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

hey. There is a FUSE in my inside fuse panel that if blown (because I had my radar detector wire in it and SHORT) it will say NO BUS and not run.

ALSO...
I tapped into the wiring harness on my Dak quite a while ago.
Following form the "fuel pump" relay I spliced into the circuit that powers that relay for a automatic SECURITY system I made. (which has been the TITS I tell ya).

I did not know until I did that, that it also prevents the starter from turning over, and after about 15 seconds the lights start to pop up and it displays "No Bus".

So, I know of two things besides the PCM to cause it form my own experience.

1) Blown Fuse
2) Fuel pump Relay or circuit.

I thought that there's a common wiring splice problem on the 3.9/5.2/5.9 harness where 3 wires are spliced together with solder and many guys have found the solder connection is poorly done. Supposely, it causes symptoms similar to this. Do a search.
