found brass chips in the pan the other day. i pulled the pan because recently, the damn thing shifts really early(and super soft) no matter where i adjust the tv linkage. it doesnt slip, doesnt burn fluid and all the gears are there. it doesnt coast freely in any gears, so i know the clutch packs are still working. a little birdy told me that the tv linkage mount(or something) might have snapped off inside the tranny. what do you all think....

Anything is possible, but that'd be the first time I've heard of that particular problem. If you have scraps in the pan, I would look at a clogged filter, or worse, a contaminated valve body. This would easily explain the short-shifting. Certainly sounds like you have a flow restriction somewhere. If so, the valvebody needs a thorough cleaning, and the cooler and lines need purging.

Yeah, that would tend to give the nod to more crud in the valvebody.

How do you clean the valvebody? Not that I even know what that is...

if you drop the transmission fluid pan, there will be a valve body. the filter is directly connected to it. take it out, and take it apart. make sure you remember what goes where that is really important.

and if you take it out, be extremely careful tightening the bolts back down, most valvebodies require only 12-19 INCH pounds ( = 1 - 1.5 foot pounds!!) of torque on the bolts! if you overtighten, that'll be the end of that valve body. its also the best time to add a shift kit too!

There shouldn't be ANY metal in the oil pan!! Forget about the valve body. It may be plugged up with brass pieces and cleaning it may bring back your shift "feel", but it won't be fixing your bigger problem. What you need to know is where did the brass originate from??? Chances are its a bushing that's worn out. I'm not familiar with that tranny, but what you should do is find out what BRASS parts are in the tranny first. Usually there are brass bushing or shims between the clutch packs and when they start to go you MAY get soft shifting. Also if you had a bad TV cable linkage in most cases you would get hard shifting at red line or close to it regardless of throttle postion. You may want to try a good additive like Seafoam or Lucas to see it that will buy some more time for your tranny.

Buying time was pretty much a forgone conclusion. I think we were mostly trying to shore up the immediate issue.
