Subject: Test Drove 4.7L 4x4
IP: Logged

Message:
Today I test drove a 2001 CC 4x4 SLT with the 4.7L. When pulling out of the lot onto a main street, it felt a bit sluggish. I have heard that the 4.7 lacks the low end torque of the 5.2. Is the 5.2 any better for a 4x4 w/ an auto? I don't mean to get into the 4.7 vs. 5.2 vs. 5.9 deal. I almost have to have an auto because I live in an area where people ride your bumper in stop and go traffic, even when going up hills. Also, I noticed something on the bottom of the door jam that looked like a drain plug. Did dakotas ever come with this? The '04 QC I looked at didn't have them. Other than the sluggish acceleration at the low end, I liked the 4.7. Once the rpms went up, there was plenty of power.
Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

hummm maybe that 4.7L needs a tune up, or it had the "death flash" to the PCM.. I chirp the tires on normal takeoff all the time (31x10.5 with 3.55 gears) I love the low end on my 4.7L, but my tires don't :-) even stock my low end was about the same as it is now.. the exhaust/k&n filter gave me a little more punch, especially from 2K on up...

Damn. mine jerks my family's necks back when i goose mine. VERY responsive.

I've heard not every TPS is set exact. You can find info on adjusting that if you buy a 4.7 and then do a search here.
That engine SCREAMS too. Both are good engines.

Thank you all for the responses. One more question: Do the 4.7s have electronic throttle control, or do they have a throttle cable?

I'm a little wary of electronic throttle control... I just don't trust it :-)

I feel the same way about the ETC. The throttle cable has been around forever. Not all "old" technology is bad. Anyone have any info on the drain plug question?

W/o seeing a picture the only thing I can suggest is maybe it had a good PROFESSIONAL rust proofing job done. I say professional because usually when you buy rust proofing they only spray the bottom (and very lightly at that). A good professional job involves drilling holes in the sills and doors and spraying rust proofing in those cavities. It only makes sense since must rust starts from the inside out. They then plug the hole with a plastic plug.

My dakota, is a 2001 CC 4x4 Sport, with a 5-speed HD manual, with 3.55 gears and a 4.7L,

I love it, I can Bark the Tires pretty good at about 60 mph, shifting into 3rd, when I had my 31's at least, now with my 32's I didn't know how much an inch more on a Tire would effect it, I cannot get as much of a bark now. I had a Tune up about 2 months ago, and it really woke my truck up, it has 79000 some miles.

2001 Dak CC sport 4x4

4.7L V8, 5-speed Manual

3.55 rear

HO cams, Gibson Headers, Flowmaster 40 series, KN FIPK GEN II, F&B 70mm Ported Throttlebody.

I love the 4.7 motor, from what I hear it is a strong motor, runs great with about 80K miles on it, and I run 93 octane, runs great. 87 makes my spark plugs knock, or did before I had a Tune up, now it might be fine, but I perfer 93

my neighbor has a '97 dakota RC 2wd with the 5.2 and 5 speed. It has headers and a full flowmaster exhaust system. It sounds like a muscle car w/ at least a 340 when revved. How does this compare to a 4.7 w/ the same mods? One more thing: How difficult are the HO cams+intake to install and also does it require premium fuel? I guess the only way for me to determine whether to get a 5.2 or 4.7 is to test drive them both myself. I favor the 5.2 because my dad had a '73 barracuda w/ the 318, and the engine outlasted the body because it rusted out from Pittsburgh winters. Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make an informed decision on the dakota.

The 4.7 will make more top end power. Lots of info on HO cam swap on this site if you do a search, difficulty will depend on your level of expertise. Toughest part is R&R of the valve covers, if you can handle that it shouldn't be much of a problem.

it isn't hard to bark the tires, I love doing it, but it wheres those buggers down, I slammed it into first, and mashed it, and just sat there, no wheel hop, and just kept shifting, I was at about 4,000 rpms for a long time, blue smoke was just rolling.

weirdly my tires still hold up, and they are all terrains
