 Subject: 180 T Stat and Gas Mileage

Since the engine is now running colder, isn't it going to get less gas mileage? since it is not running as efficiently. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I would like to do this, but I only get about 14mpg right now as is. I really don't want that to go down.

I changed mine and didn't notice any change in MPG. If your worried about MPG then you bought the wrong thing.

It's not that I am all that worried about the mileage, I was just wondering. I am very aware that I bought a V8. And I bought it becuase I wanted the power.

I am considering changing my thermostat as well and also going with the Autolite plugs. I have a 2000 4.7 CC 4x4, so I am not looking for tons of power. A little more power is always nice, but if it comes at the expense of significant gas mileage then I will forget about it. I have already done a custom intake and exhaust, which has helped nicely. My question is, will the thermostat & new plugs cost me more than 1 mpg?

While the factory and factory replacement spark plugs work, the Magnum engines have shown slightly better performance with the Autolite 3923 Spark Plugs. The Autolite 3923's are a standard tip spark plug that is one heat range colder than stock, as compared to the extended "Special Power Tip" plugs that the engine came with. Why the difference? A standard tip plug is less susceptible to detonation, is a good replacement for modified Magnum engines, and work very well with modified engines as well...especially when using Nitrous or a Supercharger. In some cases, the Autolite 3923's also showed a 4-5HP difference at the rear wheels on the Dyno. (The test was performed with new OEM Spark plugs vs. the Autolite 3923's. No changes to the engine and the plugs were tested on the same day under the same conditions.)

So are the 3932's one heat range colder than the 5224's which are the same as the stock heat range or what? I bought the 5224's for my truck but I still have the receipt and want the colder heat range. Thanks

Yes, the 3923's are the colder range plug. There is nothing wrong with ones you have, but these ones might do a little more for your power.

what about the installation, I was looking at my engine and the AC lines run across the top of two of the plugs in the front. how do you get these out? are they hard?

I did the installation last night, it wasn't to bad, but you need to make sure that you have a universal U-joint to get to the back plug on the passenger side. Other than that it went well.

Back to the thermostat - As I understand it running your engine colder with the 180 Tstat will produce slightly better combustion (more efficient burn) due to the colder and denser intake charge and generally cooler temperature of the combustion chamber. The increase in combustion is more than enough to compensate for the slightly increased drag the engine exhibits with a colder Tstat. Thus you will experience inceased power and MPG. Sounds reasonable to me.
