I am by no means an expert in anything but this makes no sense to me. How are long hills no different than flat ground? If you keep you foot with constant throttle pressure and you are going uphill eventually the transmission will hunt AND find a lower gear(manuals excluded).
My vote is FOR the cruise.

As I stated, it requires constant throttle pressure and your speed should remain constant and not drop as it might on rolling terrain. For all practical purposes a long hill is a straight line or flat. You know, much like saying that one side of a triangle is flat. In this case flat and horizontal are not the same thing.

Oh, one more thing. Since the earth is round, there are no flat roads, it's all one big hill. I just haven't figure out whether you are alway going up or always going down.

Hills are not flat. Practical = Good gas mileage. Gas mileage is worse on a hill than on the flat ground.

Rob C, don`t be such a hard head and after all, who cares about gas consumption more than knowing that our engines are not polluting, and working under the best circunstances to produce the most amount of power and using the least amount of gas. It just feels good.

ricardcapecod, you're very strange. N56629, OK so we know you can copy and paste what other people write then add some quotation marks and ridicule it. It doesn't make you right or any wiser, mostly just annoying. If you want to prove how smart you are, tell us how to get better gas mileage without giving us vague (and mostly useless) advice, like "I use my right foot, it's better than cruise control." Or drop gems on us, like "The earth is not flat!" OK Columbus, we know that. How about you flamers just dump the bickering and get back on subject.

I believe that technique is certainly part of this topic. You are the one that declared that cruise control was the ultimate method and then when into a tizzy when several people disgreed with you. I guess you are not used to that.

N56629, you need to either get your tizzy-detector fixed or find out what 'tizzy' means. Also, if I had said what you are claiming I said, why didn't you copy and paste it like like you normally do? I don't have a problem with people disagreeing with me, everyone's got an opinion and they have a right to it. What I objected to was people suggesting that I was too dimwitted to figure out how to use my right foot to get better mileage. And most of you people with the right foot theory aren't maintaining a set speed but rather modulating your speed. I do a lot of driving in heavy traffic so slowing down up hills and speeding up going down hills isn't going to happen. Using CC I'm averaging over 19 mpg with a 4.7L auto 4X4 3.73 gears, how many of you are doing better?
Everyone has a right to their own opinion, no one has a right to their own facts.

Can do!

"it [cruise control] doesn't have the tendency to get "lead foot" like I do." RobC

"What I objected to was people suggesting that I was too dimwitted to figure out how to use my right foot to get better mileage."

Personally, I don't think that you find any reference to being "dimwitted." Anyhow, let's see what was really said.

"Rob C, The fact that you are not able to be more efficient than the cruise c, doesn`t mean that no one else can."---ricardcapecod

Now that doesn't sound derogatory in any way. Now let's see what Rob C has to say about people that disagree with him, or worse yet, agree with me.

"For those of you that think you have a better solution using your foot, say "Hello!" to the Wizard for me because you're living in the land of Oz!"

"ricardcapecod, not only are you delusional but you seem to be a N56629 groupie."

Am I missing anything yet, Rob? Let's face it, Rob, you just couldn't stand the fact that the experiences of several people didn't coincide with your own.

Yep, we are all just a bunch of "groupies" that got together in this thread in order to gang up on you.

ROTFLMAO!!!

N56629, "ROTFLMAO!!!" You're pathetic and quite a piece of work. I pity those that have to see you and deal with you everyday. Glad it's not me. Go on, keep copying and pasting, selectively. Just keep coming back with more stuff, don't let it go, just drag it on forever. You're amusing in a court jester-like way. You still failed in your "Can do!" to copy & paste the statement by me that "Cruise control is the ultimate". Mostly because I never said it. Also, if I tell ricard something, since when does it apply to everyone? I didn't realize that you are all one collective and I'm the only outside individual, did you? Maybe in your world, that's how you perceive it.

I had a 93 318 Auto, 2wd Club Cab Dakota with the 3.92 rear end.

I bought it used with 26k miles on it and it was completely stock. Stock, I got 12-14mpg in the city and 17mpg highway.

I went to Autozone and paid 17 dollars for an open 14 inch universal round air cleaner. I installed the adapter for the PVC pipe and put it on.

I then got a dual outlet 40 series Flowmaster installed with two 2 1/4 inch pipes going out under the back bumper. It was very loud.

My mileage however increased to 17mpg city and a solid 21mpg highway.

If I remember correctly though, the 93 318 trucks had a 3 1/2 cat and piping from the y-pipe to the muffler. I'm sure that had something to do with the gas mileage.

so if i pull the stock muffler off, and put a 40 series dual output flowmaster with pipes comming out the back, that makes a difference? i already have a k&n airfilter. what about the stupid catalytic converter? if i pull that off, and run just the flowmaster, i know it will sound mean....
let me know

Yeah, I forgot about the catalytic converter. When I had the flowmaster put on, the cat was bad too and he replaced it with a high flow model.

I think what really helped with the MPG was the stock 3 1/2 pipes on those trucks. If I remember right, the 93 and 94 V8 Dakotas were the only ones with that big an exhaust pipe stock.

I think you could do better than Flowmaster though. If I had it to do all over again, I'd get a Magnaflow straight through muffler. They are straight through rather than chambered and will flow better.

That truck of mine had fewer miles on it than yours does too. But I think the biggest improvement you can make is to lay off the gas pedal.

In my 1999 5.2L 5 speed 4x4 Dakota I have now, going 70mph on the highway, I get 18.5mpg, if I go 60mph instead, I'll get 20mpg.

And these figures are not from the trip computer in the overhead console, that's from calculating with a calculator at every fill up.

How do I get good gas mileage?

I have a 1999 3.9 Magnum motor with automatic transmission and a little over 111,000 miles. I get about 17 mpg on the highway and overall about 300 miles out of a tank of gas that takes about 18.5 to fill up. It does not matter if I set the cruise on 60 or 75 on the highway...it's all the same. Does the fuel type make a difference? I noticed that there is no airflow going into the breather/ air filter area other than a few holes drilled into the body NEAR the intake area. I use to have a 1990 that got 20-23 on the highway. If I changed the oil every 3000 miles, it got about 18, but if I just added oil, the gas mileage was better. It had 337,000 on it when I was rear ended and it was totaled!

How to get good (better) gas mileage?

Pay special attention to #4 below ( Synthetic Lubricants & Amsoil ).

Ten Tips for efficient engine operation which will IMPROVE PERFORMANCE ... and MPG ... in these times of higher gasoline prices.

1. Pay attention to how you drive.
Don't exceed highway speed limits. Use moderate-to-easy acceleration. Gas mileage is negatively affected by fast acceleration and fast deceleration. Use cruise control on highway trips. Maintaining a constant speed helps reduce fuel consumption.

2. Engine maintenance
Maintain a properly tuned engine. Dirty spark plugs do not create the maximum spark and cause reduced horsepower and increased emissions.

3. Limit reliance on air conditioning
Limit use of air conditioning, especially during hot summer days. Yes, we know it's not as comfortable but the issue here is saving gas.

4. Synthetic lubricants - Amsoil
Switch to synthetic motor oil and drivetrain lubricants. Independent tests show savings of five to eight percent using AMSOIL synthetic motor oil, gear lubes and ATF.

5. Air filter
Install clean air filter as needed. To get optimal efficiency from your engine, it has to breathe.

6. Aerodynamics
Keep windows rolled up at speeds over 40 mph. Open windows when driving over 40 mph can create a wind drag that will lower your mileage. Avoid use of roof rack. Reduce aerodynamic drag and improve your fuel economy by placing items inside the trunk whenever possible. Sun roofs also disturb smooth aerodynamic air flow and reduce mileage.

7. Tire Maintenance
Properly inflate your tires. Keep tires balanced and rotated regularly. Use radial tires for less friction between tire and road. Keep front-end aligned for better mileage and longer tire life.

8. Excess weight
Pack light and clean out your trunk. Every 200 pounds of unnecessary weight shaves one mile per gallon off your gas mileage. You would be surprised how much stuff most people carry around in their trunks that they aren't using.

9. Minimize Idling.
Idling any longer than a minute wastes gas and one minute of idling uses more fuel than restarting your engine. When possible avoid drive-thrus. Idling for as little as 10 minutes while you sit in line can waste 5 or 6 miles worth of gas. Limit warm-ups to 30 seconds. Allowing your vehicle to idle excessively wastes gas.

10. Plan and combine your trips.
Make a list and do all your grocery shopping once a week. Car pool, hike it, bike it or use public transportation if possible.

1. Stick with stock size "P" rated tires.

2. maintain proper inflation

3. SLOW DOWN! I got a 5mpg difference from 65MPH to 75mph

4. Lighten the load. take all that junk out of your toolbox.

5. Air Gate. drop the tailgate unless you constantly haul stuff around (like I do)

6. If nothing else works, Park it and bum rides.
