I recently aquired a 1994 Dakota, 2wd, 5.2, automatic.... It has a flowmaster 2.5" single exhaust and a K&N air filter. It runs good right now, but I am looking at possibly buying a performance chip for it. I have been told Hypertech is good, and also the Venom 400. I have also heard that a chip wont really help and I should go with a more aggressive cam. If anyone has any experience with chips or cams, please let me know. I dont want to spend $300 on a chip to have it not make any difference! THANKS!

Define "chip." While there are programers like SuperChips, you are not really adding or swapping a "chip." If you are referring to so-called "chips" that are found on eBay, then you are probably looking at some junk that won't do a thing. Both Jet and Superchip seem to work satisfactorly.

I WAS looking at the Venom 400 controller or the Mopar computer upgrade, but have been advised that I would be better off to get the mopar cam and lifters, would be more "bang for the buck"... along with a high flow converter and some headers. This from a guy who builds Dodge race cars. But, thanks for the input!

Even after all of that you are going to want a controler to take advantage of it all. Does your friend know of any cars running with a stock PCM?

"dodge racecars" and dodge 5.2 magnum dakotas are usually not in the same category. Yeah a big cam, lots of compression and open exhausts are great for "dodge racecars" but those are not idealistic for a factory tuned motor.

Since you already seem to have some of the basics done, i'd go for the MP controller.

MP Computer is your only option when it comes to a PCM unit. I don't think superchips or hypertech or anyone for that matter is making them for your year.

Also MP comps are starting to get discontinued or at least hard to come by, better hurry

Go with a cam and computer.

You are going to need the PCM. It does make a big difference and will help get the most out of all the other mods. OBDI trucks like yours do not have the benefit of a Hypertech or similar setup. I put a PCM in my 92, made a big difference.

Thanks! I didnt want to get the comp without hearing some comments on how it performs. My Dakota runs good, but it is doggy off the line... It also seems to have fits. Sometimes when I come off of a light it rips, and sometimes it dogs out... Maybe the mechanical fan? Cant quite figure it out. I am thinking of an electric fan and a comp as a first step, then the cam and lifters later. Thanks for all the input! It's nice to have some background info before dropping 3 or 4 bills on mods!

Check your intake for a blown plenum gasket. Common problem on all magnum V8s. It could account for some of the dogginess, especially if some of the injectors are partially clogged as a result.

I used to have a 93 reg. cab sport with the 5.2 and did a few minor mods which included Mopar perf. computer, shortie headers and true duals, homebrew ram air, and MSD 6A with blaster coil, electric fan, and shift kit. I can tell you the mopar perf. comp. was a great investment. Really woke it up. Mine was also like yours in being inconsistant off the line when it was stock. After I put in the computer it roasted the tires off the line so bad I had to beef up the springs and lower it to get it to hook up. Ran 14.50's @ 95 mph. with the open differential and 3.55 gears. The only drawback was the Mopar comp. required running at least 92 octane fuel or it would spark knock. But it sure was a fun truck.
