Subject: 360 magnum with Edelbrock RPM Heads

Just had a valve spring crack and found the perfect reason to tell my wife I nead a MP 360 10.5.1 short block with Edelbrock RPM Magnum alum. heads.

Should I get the 1.6 rollers and harden rods from Hughes Engines? They are suppose to be made just for the Edelbrock heads or can a 1.7 set benefit me more. If so what kind?
Assembled heads are $1440
1.6 roller rockers are $225
Push Rods are $109

I will be swapping from my 318 M1 single, 50 mm TB 22# injectors, and it looks like I will need to find an oil pan and valve covers. What should I look out for during the swap and are there any tips anyone can give.
Any speedy help is appreciated since I ordered the block today and the heads tomorrow.

Anyone have an idea what a set up like that should dyno with a decent cam and MP headers

Any cam suggestions? I'm talking to Comp tomorrow.

Didnt realize Edelbrock made alluminum heads for magnums, checked thier site to be sure and its a dream com true.

A good cam would probably be the one they use in the 380 horse crate, it is listed as the replacement cam for that engine, and they use it on thier 402 stroker engines too. That might be a good place to start. That and a Mopar M1 Intake or RPM Air Gap and with that kind of compression I could only imagine you would be making better than 400 HP if you went the Carb route.

If your going efi listen to the comp cams guys, even if your going carb I would take thier suggestions above all others, because they probably have the perfect cam for your ride. Also EFI I would expect to need a bigger throttle body and injectors since this monster will need lots of air and fuel, and a reprogramed PCM.

I would use the 1.6 ratio rockers because thats what was made for the heads, plus on a engine like that you will probably have enough lift where the extra valve lift wouln't acount for much more flow. That all depends on what valve hight the heads flow the most air, if the extra lift has a good increase in flow it might be worth it.

My biggest concern after reading past post are the items that will not work off of my 318.

Some say replace the oilpan, some say shave the dip tube 1 inch.

Looks like I'll need a flex plate and then someone says they are the same once they get the part from Dodge.

H Balancer will have to be swapped.

Are there a difference with mounts?
What really sucks is, I just baught a brand new MP PCM for a 318 because I thought the voltage regulator was going out in my old MP PCM and I fixed the problem with an Optima gel cell battery. Replaced a Never Ready I bought in a crunch at Wally Would. Any one with 318-360 swaps please share your growing pains. I'm in too deep to turn back now.

And if anyone is wondering about Jet Hot coating, I just sent my old MP or Gibson Headers off and they said they would have them back to me in 5 Days. We'll see about that.

Anyone want to buy a working MP PCM? for a 93 Dakota 318 Auto. I actually think it runs better than the new one. I'll probably put it on E-bay.

The 318/360 Magnum oil pan will swap over. This differs from the 318/360 LA oil pan (which is different due to the larger mains on the 360). Essentially, the Magnum oil pan is a 360LA pan with engine-specific gaskets to take up the size difference caused by the mains. Just use the 318 Magnum pan with 360 Magnum gaskets (as is done by Mopar) and you're golden. No shaving required.
The 318/360 Magnum intakes (OEM or M1) interchange.
The Magnum mounts are the same.
The flexplate is another matter. Yes, they are essentially the same. The difference depends on what year you're talking about. Through 1995, the flexplates were identical. The external weight (to balance the 360 Magnum) was on the torque converter. In 1996, the balance weight was moved to the flexplate. So, basically, through 1995 the flexplates were zero-balance. From 1996 on, the torque converters became zero-balance. Also in 1996, the bolt pattern was changed slightly for attaching the flexplate to the converter, so you can't mix pre and post 1996 models. Warranty repairs on pre-1996 units get the 1996-up converter and flexplate. In other words, it will retrofit to the pre-'96 units, but it must be done as a pair (flexplate and converter). 318's have no external balance requirements, so the flexplates are all zero-balance. You can use your 318 flexplate. You can use your 318 torque converter as long as the required 360 Magnum balance weight is added to it. If opting for a new converter, get one specific to the 360 Magnum (regarding balance weight), and also specific to whether your flexplate is pre or post 1996. All 1996 units have stickers and stanping on them stating "90 degrees," meaning the bolt pattern for the flexplate to converter is a 90 degree pattern. Pre-'96, is was not a perfect 90 degree pattern. Hope that helps.

Thanks Gen1 for the useful info. I didn't want to buy a pan unless I had to. I am already buying more pieces parts than I expexted but I kind of had no choice, except for the head set up from Hugh's. $1,900 "BANG" (includes bolts, hrdn pushrods, 1.6 roller rockers made for the heads and exhaust studs). My converter is the MP or B&M 2800 stall, I can't remember if the converter was just for a 318 or not but if it was, are you saying I'll need both the Flex and a new converter? As for the short block 360 magnum set up from Mopar I have no idea what year block the cast is from. Which may make a difference on the oil pan swap. Is that correct? Have you had any dealings with these new heads, Gen1?

Trent, yes it does use the higher 92+ octain. Or you will get valve clatter. You might want to wait till winter to install it at the going price of gas. What is your address so I can give you a figure including a shipping price.

No, there shouldn't be any sort of problem with the oil pan swap.
If the converter was for a 318 (all that means is that it's a zero-balance unit) and you have the flexplate with it already you're fine. (The 1996-up issue centered around the bolt pattern for attaching the converter to the flexplate) All you'll need to do is either have a machine shop tack on some balance weight to the converter for the 360, or order the balancer that B&M sells. It bolts between the converter and the flexplate, and fits the existing bolt pattern. It'll only bolt in one way, so it's a breeze. The flexplate will bolt to your crank without a problem. Be sure to order the correct balancer plate (if you go the B&M route) for your engine. The 360 Magnum uses slightly less balance weight than the 360LA. If you get the machine shop job, be sure they know it's a 360 Magnum, not the LA.

That's not valve clatter you hear with lower octane; its detonation in the combustion chamber and is very harmful to your engine.
