Whoa, Josh-White smoke=STEAM=blown head gasket,
cracked intake,or cracked head(or block)i think.
Valve seals=oil=BLUE(ish)black smoke.Do a COMPRESSION test on ea cyl, & note sparkplug color on ea as well.Ck radiator&cap for brn/milky
goo-also evidence of blown headgasket. I Have a 93Dak w/5.2 150k mi & it blows blu whn 1st crank & whn get dn..uses 1qt oil/2kmi, so Iknow smoke is from OIL. R U usin OIL??, or water frm rad??
Good luk w/yur truk. krellco

ohh no its not a head gasket its burning oil like a muther...about once a month the oil light comes on when i get on the breaks the turns off when i am stopped for a second or two(the slowing down uncovers the oil pickup so i lose pressure)so i check the oil and it doent even show any on the dipstick so i put about 4 qts in and its level again......but i also leak a lil bit too....thanks for the concern krellco....also what are the signs of a blown belly pan gasket

look down the tb with a light and the throttle plates open.if you see oil, black sludge, dirty looking then you may have a plenium gasket gone

if you don,t keep a closer eye on your oil level your going to need a motor

Valve stem seals can be replaced and doesn't mean you need to rebuild the heads. It's a lot of work but, not nearly as much as rebuilding heads. However, you don't have the symptoms of bad valve guide seals. When your valve guide seals get worn or harden and don't seal properly, you will see blue smoke under high vacuum conditions like during deceleration. The high vacuum draws oil past your valve guides into the combustion chamber from the intake valve whereas at other times not much oil gets past the valve guides. With your symptoms, I'd be checking everything Krellco abbreviated and the belly pan gasket. I sure hope you don't think adding oil whenever it's 4 quarts low is a normal or even wise thing to do? Good luck with that.

Your Dakota seems to have a problem with the owner. I would suggest replacing that first and then the engine.

there is a difference between steam and smoke...... steam evaporates as soon as it leaves the tail pipe.....smoke wofts around for a while until its blown away by the wind......my engine doesnt use water at all the only color it has in it is green and rust.....and ill restate...it blows smoke on start up for a second or two then it goes away...... sometimes it blows smoke when i rev it up as ROB C said under high vacuum......and when i sit in bumper to bumper traffic like i did on south padre during spring break it was constantly blowing smoke but then after i get back on to open roads and see higher rpms it goes away...... now the reason i want to rebuild the heads is to fix the valve seals and also because the valvetrain is fairly noisy..... now the reason for pouring about 4 qts of oil in is because that is what it takes to get the level back up to normal but i add a little extra because i know it is going to be burned off or leak out somewhere..... now...the heads arent my only problem.... i want to replace all of the bearings ie. crank rod cam if its got it.... and if it needs new rings ill prolly buy new rings and a hone and hone the bores while im at it.... so as you can see im lookin at a slight overhaul with minimal machine work...now my questions... whats would be the average price of all the parts ive listed and why do people like OLD GUY post when they have nothing to say....oh and by the way the heads off of the 02 should fit my 93 because nothing has really changed on the engine design

all depends on where you live i guess.

Well before we get to far I'm in Ontario Canada. So it makes it not very economical off the bat.

By rough conversion I meant it has around 12 000km's on it, so I guessed it would be in the 10 000 mile area
