Almost ready to put a 5.9 in my 97 with a 5.2 and NV3500. I allready have the 5.9 flywheel, and have the clutch figured out. All of the clutch parts are the same except for the pressure plate, which must be heavier duty for the 5.9. The bad part is that the long block does not come with an oil pan. I've searched the site and can find no definate answer as to wether I can use the 5.2 pan on the 5.9. I know that they call for a different gasket, but also call for the same aftermarket pan. Anyone have any idea? I would venture to guess that they use the same pump and pickup and the only difference in the gasket would be thinner ends for the bigger mains on a 5.9. Help me out if you know.

i dont know the specifics, but i too was in the market for an oil pan for my new long block. i had a bud parting out his 5.2 dakota... i figured the pans would interchange just like about 90% of stuff will cross over to the 5.9 from the 5.2... mentioned it not being able to use the 318 pan on the 360 because of the mains.

You can interchange the 5.2 and 5.9 oil pan, just use the engine-specific oil pan gasket. In fact, the 360LA pan can be use on either 5.2/5.9 with the appropriate gasket set.

Yeah, the issue is the mains on the 5.9. On the LA engines, the 318 and 360 would not swap for the same reasons. When Mopar went Magnum on the LA's, they used a 360LA-style oil pan, and made up the difference with the gaskets. One easy way to pick out the 5.9 Magnum gasket is the small tabs on each side of the rear main bearing cap that extend out and tie into the other half of the gasket, while the 5.2 Magnum does not.

For the 93 and up magnum engines you will need the following for 3.9 to 5.2 assuming auto trans.
Add 2 wires into harness for 2 extra cylinders. green/orange ground wire is already in harness.
Same engine mounts trans and front coils/torsion arms will work but upgrading is suggested.
A PCM from a compatible year V8 for the extra cylinders will be needed.
V8 fan shroud and coolant hoses for V8. All other accessories will work.

all MAGNUM motors 3.9 5.2 5.9 all have same bell housing bolt holes auto and manual. Thats all though all converters and pressure plates are different, 5.2 are internal balanced and 5.9 are external balanced.

ok i have a ?. i just did that 3.9-5.2 conversion. and i had to use a computer out of a full size ram to keep it running. now i have no power to my instrument cluster. ive tried three different pcms. but all off by a year. i have a 98. and ive used a 01, 97,96. the last two are the only ones that work for the most part.

ok i have a 1997 Dakota with a 5.2l and im thinking on doing a swap to the 5.9l and i just would like to know what i have to do to make this possible? can i still use my 5.2 heads on the 5.9 can i get a way with just buying a 5.9 short block vs a 5.9 long i just need a list of everything i need to do and watch out for.

Hello and Good Day I have a 91 Dakota with a v-6 that is Blown my neighbour has a 96 4x4 V8 magnum for sale and i was wondering if it is possible to put his motor in my chassis i`m pretty handy with the tools and know what not to do just wondering if it`s possible and how much hassle is it to swap it out
