Subject: Jet Chips? Worth It?
IP: Logged

Message:
I've been thinkin' about gettin a Jet Chip. I've read several postings on here regarding them and have mixed feelings.

Questions?

Does the computer really learn? and will you eventually lose your gains?

How much increased power? mileage?

Are they worth the money?

Thanks. I love this site.

I agree with 2002RT360. Recently put one on my '04 4.7 (got it for free and yes it is the right one for my truck) and I can tell no difference whatsoever. Would have been pretty P-O ed if I had just spent $250 for one.

I've heard it referred to it as a paperweight. I can't think of a better use myself. I bought a used one off e-pay for my 02 4.7 and put it in. I felt a very small difference (maybe 5 hp) and that's it. Paid $150 for it. About $140 too much. As far as the computer learning that is true the computer learns but the Jet chip modifies the info the computer receives from the sensors therefore the computer learning the chip is there and resetting things I beleive is bogus. Problem is it really don't gain anough to tell. My suggestion is do what TexasTodd says and go with the superchips. It actually re-programs your computer, not modifies the readings of the sensors which is very limited. Dyno reports I've read from several posts shows much more gain with the Superchips.

Heard the superchips was good also. But they
usually have to recalibrate the ones used
for 4.7 engines. Most of them do not work
out of the box. After you buy it you have
to mail it to them to be updated.

Just be patient, it takes a week or so to get
the superchips back depending on their backlog.
Once you get your PCM reprogrammed you will see
a good improvement in performance.

Jet Chip is garbage, at least for the 4.7. It's the same part # for the 5.2, 4.7 & 5.9! What does that tell you???? Sharing the # between the 5.2 & 5.9 I can understand, but the 4.7??? The 4.7 is a totally different engine all together!! I don't think the Jet Chip does anything more than the IAT mod. I had one on my '00 4.7 for about 3 months and all I got was less gas mileage and rough idle. I removed it and smoothness and gas mileage returned. It may work better on the 5.2 & 5.9, but I can't say for sure.

I got the jet chip stage 3 off of Ebay for $90.00 new for my '00, 5.9L, quad cab, 4x4. I already had 3 inch catback flowmaster exhaust and an airaid cold air intake. The chip did make a very noticable diffrence. It raised my rev limit and increased my mid range power. As for other comments about making it idle rough, something must be wrong. My truck still purrs like a kitten, and I can still get away with reg unleaded fuel with out problems. It did raise the operating temp but a new cooler thermostat fixed that. If you get a good deal on the chip go for it.
Good luck!

I have the jet2 for about 2 years now, and i very sun will replace it with probably the Leach flash.
I`m starting to disconsider the super chip as it does not work best with my mods. There is the B&G flash yet perhaps.
My oppinion? Not the best option.

I had JET stage 3 on my my 97'dakota/318/5spd/RC. I already had headers and flowmaster exhaust system/k&n/MSD ignition. Nothing, the worst amount of money I ever spent. I didn't monitor gas mileage or anything, but it didn't improve my track times.

Jet chips are worthless, they make a good door stop and that's about it. Do yourself a favor and have yor PCM reflashed or buy an aftermarket performance one instead. It costs a bit more but you will at least have a gain.

Jay,

The ol 5.2 is a nice motor, but, we're missing the 0.5 liters it takes, and the 4.7 still has a nicer power curve.
